The 2005 Château Barde-Haut Saint-Emilion is the one you want. They totally outdid themselves in this vintage and I’d say that without the 95 and 94-point reviews. It’s just a gorgeous wine at an incredible price that over delivers every step of the way. Think black fruits, hints of spice, and an elegant structure that’s singing right now. It’s no wonder this wine is sought after by collectors.

In recent years, the quality of Château Brane-Cantenac’s wines has continued to ascend, earning accolades from critics and wine enthusiasts alike. This upward trajectory can be attributed to several key factors: a commitment to sustainable viticulture, investment in state-of-the-art winemaking technology, and an unwavering focus on expressing the true character of their exceptional terroir.

“With a gorgeously evolved, extremely complex bouquet of forest floor, spring flowers, lead pencil shavings and red and black currants, this full-bodied, dense, ruby/plum/purple-colored wine hits the palate with an opulent, fleshy, full-bodied richness, silky tannins, and a very layered, profoundly concentrated style that is, at the same time, both powerful and sublime. This gorgeous wine from proprietor Henri Lurton will benefit from 3-5 years of cellaring and evolve for 25-30 years. “

“Lovely perfumed fragrance on the nose, ripe black fruits and scented flowers – Parma violets. Juicy and clean, this has lovely weight and texture, great acidity and juiciness with a delicate sweetness, but countered with cool, fresh, minty blackcurrants. Not trying too hard, still with some coolness – blue fruits, berries and black cherries with a clean texture. Sleek, well balanced. Lovely weight. Everything very well done here. Good drive, classic and well framed. Very easy to like.”

The terroir here is exceptional – gravel terroir with some limestone and clay deposits, making it an ideal place for healthy, expressive vines. The Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot that gets picked off here are so fresh and vibrant, they basically demand to be fermented in cement so as not to let oak interfere with expressions this pure.

“So aromatic and fresh with black olives, black truffles, gravel and dried flowers. Milk chocolate. Ovaltine. Full-bodied with fantastic old-vine tannins. Layered and very structured. Goes deep and down. One for the cellar. Superb. Maybe the best ever.” -James Suckling

“The flagship 2018 Château Lagrange is a more dense, backward, serious wine, offering an unevolved yet incredibly promising bouquet of cassis, blackcurrants, scorched earth, graphite, and violets. A big, rich, full-bodied Saint-Julien, it delivers thrilling purity of fruit, plenty of background oak, ripe, silky tannins, and a great mid-palate. This is serious stuff, but it’s going to require patience. Hide bottles for 7-8 years, count yourself lucky, and enjoy over the following two decades.” -Jeb Dunnuck

Through meticulous vineyard management and modern winemaking techniques, the Michon family has breathed new life into Château Livran, capturing the essence of its terroir with each bottle. From the complex and inviting aromas of blackcurrant, black cherry, and fig to the plush and intensely concentrated fruit palate of raspberry, mulberry, and cassis, every sip of the Château Livran screams for another.

This beauty earned five reviews of 90 points or more, with the Wine Advocate writing in their 90-point review how this one “punches above its weight, offering a level of quality and complexity that belies its price point.” That is an emphatic way to end a review. 91 more points from Jane Ansen of Decanter to go along with 92 from James Suckling, who called it “fresh and crunchy with racy acidity.” Then there’s Antonio Galloni who made this his #1 White Bordeaux Value of the Year. Needless to say, this is a no-brainer white you should be loading up on by the case.

“A more classic year than the 2003 or 2005 on either side, really showing beautifully right now, still young but full of promise, tension and juice. This is an extremely elegant, balanced Palmer, with dark berry fruits, cassis and blackberry, touch of campfire smoke, salinity and plenty of juice running through the muscular tannins. Plays with you on the finish, stretching out its flavours, salivating, totally gorgeous, surprisingly so for a vintage that can get overlooked. One that you could happily open now, or hold for another decade or more.”

The 2019 vintage of Château Puyanche is their best and highest rated to date. It boasts a harmonious blend of Cab Franc, Merlot, and Cab, showcasing a symphony of flavors that dance on the palate. Expect to be greeted by notes of ripe black fruits, subtle spices, and a hint of oak, all wrapped up in a silky-smooth texture that lingers long after each sip. This is one that is great now, but somehow, even at this price-point offers years more of excellent drinking.
90+ Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
“This estate in Saint-Christoly-Médoc has long produced great value, quintessentially Médoc-styled wines, and the 2016 La Tour St Bonnet has turned out especially well. Offering up aromas of sweet blackcurrant fruit intermingled with notions of loamy soil, tobacco leaf and vanilla pod, it’s medium to full-bodied, with powdery tannins and a nicely concentrated core of fruit. Robert Parker once described this estate as producing a miniature Grand-Puy-Lacoste, and that observation continues to resonate with me. While the 2016 drinks well today, a bit more time in the cellar will only pay dividends.” -Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
