As the 2019s are just starting to be reviewed with many not even imported yet, you can imagine my surprise when my winemaking friend, Xavier, called to tell me that I really had to hurry if I wanted this one.
I was really confused.. “What do you mean? I asked. The 2019s just came out. I just checked online and Parker hasn’t even rated this one yet.” Xavier just chuckled on the other end. Nicholas, 2019 vintage was outrageously good and I always get bigger scores from the Wine Advocate than Jeb Dunnuck. But Dunnuck has already given me a 97-point review.
Turns out, after a bit of research, (not that I didn’t trust the winemaker that Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate affectionately refers to as the ‘mad scientist’) 2019 is truly special for CDP. It’s been called a “dream vintage”, I saw “vintage of the decade” I saw a lot of things. All overwhelmingly positive about what is to come with these age-worthy 2019’s.
Decanter summarized it with this: “Châteauneuf-du-Pape is exceptional in its own way, combining elegance with power, and excelling over neighboring appellations.” I thought about it… with an exceptional year and the rare talent of Xavier, this may end up being his Mona Lisa.

95-97 Points, Jeb Dunnuck
The flagship from Xavier is the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvee Anonyme, and in 2019 it’s 60% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah, and the balance a mix of permitted varieties. Partially destemmed and brought up in a mix of demi-muids and tank, it offers a beautifully pure, vibrant bouquet of black raspberries, white and black pepper, candied orange, and violets. Complex, layered, and nuanced, this beauty is medium to full-bodied, has a seamless texture, and a great finish. It has both elegance and richness, and will keep for 15+ years.

#3 Wine Spectator Top 100 Wines of 2021
96 Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate – 95 Points, Wine Spectator
We are one of the very few folks who have Wine Spectator’s #3 Wine of the Year. This is definitely not one to miss. The 2016 vintage showcases this prized vineyard in all its glory; notes of wild black fruit, thyme, mint, eucalyptus, and bay are lifted and enjoyed with the polished tannin and mouthwatering freshness of this wine. Regarded as one of the best vintages in the last few decades, the 2016 Martha’s Vineyard has been aged to perfection for immediate enjoyment at release and will continue to reward for the next 20+ years.
At J Vineyards, Nicole is nothing short of a magician, making 30 different skus or more each vintage between her Pinots, Chardonnays, and Sparkling wines. For the vineyard’s flagship Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, up to 100 individual small lots are combined to make this great wine. Somehow, the blend is effortless–a quintessential RRV Pinot that has those soaring aromatics, bright red fruits, clove, and nutmeg spice with perfect balance.
The 2021 Napa Valley East side Cuvee is an instant classic. From the first whiff to the moment it hits the lips, its clear that this is a fabulously concentrated, serious wine: black in color, and featuring aromas of cassis, cedar and chocolate-tinged purple fruit. The mouthfeel is plush and voluptuous with a firm, solid finish that speaks to its potential for considerable aging.
Anne Sery describes her Trousse Chemise Cabernets as an ode to the Left Bank and her winemaking roots. It’s a beautiful and fresh Cabernet with aromas that leap from the glass with of black raspberry, violets, and creme de liquor notes. The mouth gives generous amounts of juicy black fruits at the core with hints of baking spice and a smooth, savory finish. This is a terrific partner for just about anything from hard cheese, to poultry, summer salads, you name it!
