Most know the Bisci Verdicchio with its ties to The French Laundry and Eleven Madison Park. And while there’s absolutely no doubt that it is a superstar wine of Marche, it actually hasn’t garnered the same kind of huge press and big scores that Umani Ronchi has gained over the past few years. As Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate emphatically declared last year, “you don’t get better value than this.”
That must be true because this year, I think the 2022 Umani Ronchi CaSal di Serra Verdicchio is as good as it gets. It’s certainly the highest rated Italian white I’ve seen so far in 2024. A 91 from Decanter and a 93-point (Editors’ Choice) from Wine Enthusiast for a wine that checks in under $25/bottle is certainly not the norm. But this is so deserving, and the best version Umani Ronchi has ever made.
There’s a good reason for that too.
This past year, Umani Ronchi decided to change their flagship ‘Casal di Serra’ Verdicchio from a single-vineyard bottling into a ‘vineyard selection’ featuring the best fruit from a few great vineyards. This was a pivotal move. The 2022 Verdicchio fruit was amazing from all three vineyard sites they pulled. And deciding to make a wine that featured only the best blocks from the three? That created lightning in a bottle…literally!
The new release from Umani Ronchi, the 2022 CaSal di Serra Verdicchio, is in a league of its own. This one hits with energetic, clean notes of stone fruit, jasmine, lemon drops, and citrus fruit with a racy mineral streak.

93 Points (Editors’ Choice), Wine Enthusiast
This Verdicchio is a flower shop in a bottle with elegant aromas of mixed flowers, green herbs, lemon oil and white gravel. A wine that is as much of a feeling as it is tasty with an amazing texture that hugs the palate with a pleasant pithy bitterness and sea-salty finish. Drink now-2035.
91 Points, Decanter
Originally a single-vineyard wine, Casal di Serra is now a selection of the Montecarotto vineyard along with three other sites. Vinified and mature sur-lie in stainless steel, it’s saline, floral and fresh with some lovely melon and soft stone fruit scents. There’s some leesy creaminess in the mouth, accompanied by vibrant yellow fruits, crunchy apple and zesty acidity.

92 Points, Wine Enthusiast
This is a huge favorite of folks in the Red Bank area. It’s a bold, unapologetic Chardonnay with juicy notes of peach, lemon sorbet, baking spice and vanilla with a rich, creamy middle and plenty of natural acidity to balance it out. The lemon vanilla finish is perhaps the wine’s calling card or the sheer drinkability of it all. Either way, it’s a Chard that people adore. It’s no wonder Wine Enthusiast called this, “a big win for fans of this bold style”.
This is a super elegant Meursault from the family-run estate located in the village of Monthelie, between Volnay and Meursault in the heart of Burgundy’s Côte de Beaune. It leads with nutty aromas of brioche, fresh butter and delicate citrus and is extremely well structured, long and stylish with great purity of fruit.
Stephan Steinmetz is a star in the Mosel wine region. His old vines are rooted in Kimmeridgian limestone, the exact same vein of rock that winds its way from Sancerre through Chablis and Champagne to its final out-cropping here in the Obermosel. His Elbling is glorious — both completely unlike anything I’ve ever had and also eerily familiar. The color is almost clear, some might call it silver. A stunning nose of green apples and lemon peel gives way to fresh pear and bright citrus fruits on the palate. It’s a stunningly focused wine with a healthy dose of minerality and acid zip, not unlike great Sancerre/Chablis and bone dry.
Elena Walch’s newly released 2022 Pinot Bianco continues to be the best example of Pinot Blanc anywhere. She’s the undisputed queen. There’s so much energy in this new release. Super light in color, with a busy nose that boasts ripe aromas of citrus, granny smith apple with a hint of freshly mowed grass. Made entirely in stainless steel, the wine is expressive, fresh and finishes as clean and tight as can be. Definitely will continue the run of 90+ scores once this one is reviewed.
