California Connoisseurs Guide recently wrote, “There are not many wineries in Northern California with such a long and distinguished history of making quality wines at affordable prices as Truchard.” That’s certainly the reputation of the winery that I’ve always known. Tony Truchard has been at this for over 40 years, and he’s every bit as experimental as he was when he first started. His thirst for making great wines is what has propelled his winery in Carneros successfully for decades.
The small, family owned winery started when the army-trained Truchard decided to plant grapes in 1974. He started out growing the grapes for their neighbors at Carneros Creek, but quickly gained notoriety for the exceptional fruit which earned them Nickel & Nickel, Frog’s Leap, Cain and Robert Mondavi as clients as well.
Eventually, like many of the great winegrowers, Tony decided to bottle his own wine, deploying the skills he learned from some of his famous winemaker friends along the way. By the late 1980’s he was bottling his own Cabernet, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel and Syrah. He found an immediate niche as the affordable over-deliver winery in Carneros and never relented that title. With 7 “Winery of the Year” Awards from Wine & Spirits Magazine in the past 27 years, Truchard remains a Napa Valley staple.

This wine remains one of the finest values in the Napa Valley and a cool-climate example of the variety, to boot. With great opening aromas of blackberry, clove and dried herb, the lifted, balanced flavors follow suit, showing plenty of freshness and length around a well-integrated and elegant core.

Domaine Jaume Vinsobres Altitude 420 is an old-vine Grenache-Syrah blend from vineyards planted in Les Collines at some of the highest points in the Rhône. The Jaumes have farmed these dizzying elevations at their estate in Vinsobres for 100+ years. The 2020 is one of his best yet, pristine and fresh, a bowl full of berried-up fruit yet with the tension and length that belies its humble price. Incredible bang for the buck, tailor-made for anyone’s house red, and a slam dunk for any kind of meat on the bone.
It’s no surprise the Wine Advocate has called the Ventoux a “screaming bargain.” Carved off the left bank of the Rhone River, the 2020 Delas Ventoux is a gorgeous medium-bodied wine with wonderful crushed red fruits, a silky mouthfeel, tremendous structure and that signature Rhone spice on the finish. I haven’t had this wine available for a few vintages, but I figure it’s the perfect springtime Red to bring back in the fold!
At J Vineyards, Nicole is nothing short of a magician, making 30 different skus or more each vintage between her Pinots, Chardonnays, and Sparkling wines. For the vineyard’s flagship Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, up to 100 individual small lots are combined to make this great wine. Somehow, the blend is effortless–a quintessential RRV Pinot that has those soaring aromatics, bright red fruits, clove, and nutmeg spice with perfect balance.

The new release is here from outstanding winemaking team of Michel Rolland, Charles Thomas, Andy Erickson and David Jelenik. This one always represents one of the best quality-to-price ratios in all of Napa Cab and in the stellar 2021 vintage, this really stands out as one of the best the Valley has to offer. It’s a racy mix of Coombsville fruit from Atlas Peak that absolutely roars out of the bottle. Always one of Napa’s great bargains and a must have even as the price starts to sneak up here a little bit.
