Phil Titus was already a beast in Napa Valley and pretty much everybody knew it. But the 100-point score for his 2016 Chappellet launched him to immediate international acclaim.
And while everyone needs a day job, Phil’s passion project was the one with his brother, Eric, producing knockout wines off the family property. The estate is in the heart of the St. Helena Appellation at the base of Howell Mountain. The vines flow seamlessly from the Silverado Trail to the Napa River, separated into 16 blocks.
This is quite literally, priceless real estate today. Phil’s parents bought ‘the ranch’ in 1968 and as one of Napa’s revolutionary pioneers, immediately ripped out the cash cow jug grapes that had been growing there for 50 years – Mondeuce, Burger, and Golden Chasselas. Their thought was given the mixture of dusty clay, sand, and river loam soils and the perfect weather – Bordeaux varieties could rival their French counterparts.
They were right and for years, the Napa elite gobbled up all their grapes for their wines. Only in the Phil and Eric decide to produce and bottle the wine under the family crest. The wines have been remarkable but none more so than the 2018 from Wine Spectator’s 99-point vintage.

The secret to Philippe’s tightly wound, complex Pinot Noir is a combo of ancient vines, natural farming techniques, and low yields. The wines are built to age, with incredible tension and length. And the secret to me securing his other-wordly 2017 old-vine Gevry-Chambertin can be chalked up to a great relationship and over a decade supporting superior Burgundian winemaking. The wine is scary good. The nose is wild, filled with spiced dark raspberries, red flowers, and baking spices. The palate is elegant and racy, with a dynamic tension that runs right through its minute-long finish. This is a high-toned, wound-up Pinot, that is starting to hit its prime and is really turning out to be a ‘must-have’ for true Burgundy lovers.
90 Points, James Suckling
Damien has crafted a delicious Médoc, full of character with dense black currant and cherry fruit, cedar, tobacco and wonderful complexity. It’s silky complexion is what pushes it over the edge (and, of course, the price!) It doesn’t hurt that it comes from a 95-point Left Bank vintage that the Wine Advocate declared, “outstanding.”
With seemingly infinite access to some of the absolute very best vineyards in the most choice AVAs in the valley, the Wagner’s set out to make Quilt– a Cabernet blend from a patchwork of the top sites in Napa (Oakville, St Helena, Atlas Peak, Coombsville, Calistoga, and Howell Mountain.) The brand new 2021 edition is a beauty – deeply concentrated, rich and a truly show stopping Cabernet. It’s a dark, hedonistic blend that combines elegance with power and pairs the two together effortlessly.
This is a sensational single-vineyard Merlot made from incredibly tiny clusters, full of some of the most elegant, intensely structured fruit from high atop Sonoma Mountain. Beautiful weight and balance with aromas of blueberries, black currants, sage and a hint of cocoa. It’s got a full, plush mouthfeel, pristine and vibrant fruit and a wonderful smooth finish. Thanks to Chad’s big bet on himself, he was able to make a knockout Sonoma Mountain beauty, without the need for any middleman, helping us to enjoy one of his best creations at an outstanding price.
