Nicholas worked with the Man In Red to put together an incredible assortment of wines with holiday meals and entertaining in mind. From hostess gifts to holiday meals to a reward for remembering that damn elf… these are tree trimming, dreidel spinning, carol singing, FA LA LA LA LA temperature controlled wines ready to drink for the season.
The Ho Ho Ho 2020 Case includes 3 each of the following four wines:
Muri Gries Pinot Grigio Alto Adige 2019
Quality Pinot Grigio from the Dolomite Mountain range of Alto Adige can often approach thirty bucks and frankly many are well worth it. This one is a knockout from a sacred place that combines monastery life with vineyard management. Flavor of fresh peaches and tart lemon are both perfectly balanced on its mineral backbone. This wine sizzles on the tongue and finishes long and strong.
Xavier Vignon Côtes du Rhône 100% 2017
Dollar for dollar, Xavier’s Côtes du Rhône is one of the best buys in the store and in the new 2017 vintage, this baby is sporting a hot new 92-point score from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate who called the wine, “Rich, velvety and long”. Xavier eased up on extraction with this 2017 blend, which allows for a lush, soft blend that is loaded with jammy blackberries, blueberries, anise and wild strawberries. It’s got a nice vibrant finish that seals the deal for me– perfect in a glass by the fireplace or with something gamey at the dinner table.
Fabre Montmayou Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva 2019
Don’t let the price tag fool you. This Cabernet from 2018 Argentinian winemaker of the Year, Herve Fabre is a knockout and crazy good for the price. Purple/black in hue. The nose is California-like, filled with black fruits, cassis, both hedonistic and refined, the tell-tale marker for old-vine sourcing. Just released, this is offering a super fresh bouquet that welcomes you in. On the mouth, it’s ripe and long. It drinks like wine that is twice its price, making it a quintessential Nicholas Wines Tuesday nighter.
Isole e Olena Chianti Classico 2017
Paolo De Marchi has won the reputation as one of Tuscany’s finest winemaker. Antonio Galloni famously remarked, “Make no mistake about it, these are some of the most exceptional wines being made anywhere in the world.” That is true and Paolo’s Chianti Classico’s are always some of the best bangs for your buck out there. The Sangiovese dominant blend lands a 93-point rave review from James Suckling and usually sees similar scores from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. For very good reason. Made in stainless steal, this boasts fresh notes of Bing Cherry, plum and warm apple pie. It’s smooth and silky and just a pleasure to drink, especially in the fall and winter.

It’s hard to beat a great value white wine and this one is a at least a cut above the rest. One prominant industry insider called the 2022 edition, “the best white wine by any within $20/cs of this price.” It’s super crisp with a great mineral streak, and was carefully picked by hand when the temperature is coolest and is kept cool all the way into the press. From there, the effect of the mineral soil takes over, providing great finesse and freshness in every bottle. This white blend has great backbone and a lot of juicy fruit coming through behind aromas of flowers and stone fruits. At this price, it’s a no brainer.

Stephan Steinmetz is a star in the Mosel wine region. His old vines are rooted in Kimmeridgian limestone, the exact same vein of rock that winds its way from Sancerre through Chablis and Champagne to its final out-cropping here in the Obermosel. His Elbling is glorious — both completely unlike anything I’ve ever had and also eerily familiar. The color is almost clear, some might call it silver. A stunning nose of green apples and lemon peel gives way to fresh pear and bright citrus fruits on the palate. It’s a stunningly focused wine with a healthy dose of minerality and acid zip, not unlike great Sancerre/Chablis and bone dry.
