Thomas Rivers Brown is arguably the best and most famous winemaker in the entire United States. The California native has made over 30 wines that have been scored 100 points, with the majority being Cabernets with price tags well into the triple digits.
But ever since he teamed up with the beloved Round Pond Estate, Cabernet lovers have been able to get a taste of the superstar’s abilities for a whole heck of a lot less than they did for his Schrader or Maybach Cellars Cabernets.
Sure, you’re sacrificing a few points, but to be able to lock into a 92-point Thomas Rivers Brown Cabernet for $40, is an opportunity that just about never comes around anymore, especially given that the man has done everything there is to do in wine.
Almost all of the fruit that goes into this sleek, sexy Cab Sauv comes from Round Pond’s Rutherford estate, further making this one of the best bargains you’re going to find anywhere near Napa. But because these are Round Pond’s Kith & Kin wines, first made for their family and friends, the prices are incredibly juicy.

92 Points, Wine Spectator
Ripe and lush, but also fresh, with a very enticing beam of loganberry, açaí berry and raspberry fruit flavors driving through, flecked with anise and apple wood accents along the way. There’s focused, juicy energy through the finish.
92 Points, Tasting Panel
Dense and meaty, with an anise and roasted coffee backdrop. A parade of red and black fruit march around its upright structure. Finishes with a burnish of cinnamon cedar that keeps the palate satisfied.

90 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
Xavier Vignon’s brand spanking new CDR 100% is a thing of beauty. It’s already got a blessing from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate who described this wine as, “Full-bodied, concentrated and supple”. This is a gorgeous and intricate blend that features all of the Southern Rhone appellations. This year, the blend was 40% Grenache, 25% Mourvedre, 15% Syrah, 7% Cinsault, 7% Marselan, 6% Terret Noir. Nobody can do it like the mad scientist, Xavier Vignon.
This is Joe Wagner and Quilt’s inaugural Red blend called Threadcount. It is a total knockout at the price point for this style of wine. It’s a big voluptuous wine and very fruit forward. The nose is straight up dark chocolate dipped raspberries and it tastes of fresh-baked blueberry pie, spice, and a touch of toffee. It’s the kind of quality blend that you’ve come to expect from the family behind Caymus.
The newly released Fiancetto Howell Mt. Cabernet is a dream – a gorgeous, elegant dark-fruited Cabernet Sauvignon that is it picks up time in the glass, unfurls its full signature of cedar laced cassis nose and mid palate of chocolate-covered cherries and savory spices. Only four palates of this (224 cases) were made off a gorgeous, sprawling high elevation spot 1500 feet above sea level. It’s full and plush and finishes fresh and oh so long. The price is crazy for Howell Mountain Cabernet but that’s what Ry Richards and Fiancetto is all about.
With seemingly infinite access to some of the absolute very best vineyards in the most choice AVAs in the valley, the Wagner’s set out to make Quilt– a Cabernet blend from a patchwork of the top sites in Napa (Oakville, St Helena, Atlas Peak, Coombsville, Calistoga, and Howell Mountain.) The brand new 2021 edition is a beauty – deeply concentrated, rich and a truly show stopping Cabernet. It’s a dark, hedonistic blend that combines elegance with power and pairs the two together effortlessly.
