Worlds Best Single Barrel Bourbon – Whisky Magazine
Since 1849, Rebel has boasted an original, award-winning recipe has been made using only the purest Kentucky limestone-filtered water and new charred white oak barrels for aging. This gives them a distinct advantage over most everyone.
When I was down at Lux Row in January, I couldn’t wait to pick out my own single barrel of their Cask Strength Wheated Bourbon.
What is a wheated bourbon you ask? Well it’s a bourbon that uses wheat instead of rye to mix with the corn in the mashbill. There are a few bourbons that come from Kentucky that use wheat in their mashbills. Perhaps you’ve heard of a few of them, Weller, Old Fitzgerald, oh & Pappy Van Winkle. I love a wheated bourbon because they deliver more depth of flavor & an almost creamy mouth feel.
My single barrel from Rebel is much different from the single barrel Cask Strength that Rebel usually puts into the market. This is a 120 Proof beauty that was born in March of 2017. I love the way this one came together. The molasses, gingerbread, vanilla, oak and spice combination here is so smooth and effortless. This is a beauty.

The Macallan 15 Year Old Double Cask is a balanced single malt whisky created by bringing together the perfect harmony of two oaks into one exceptional single malt whisky. Sherry seasoned American oak adds delicate vanilla to the subtle spice of European oak, delivering a whisky with a sweeter, warmer taste and character. This has become a true bread and butter product for the distillery. It delivers notes of signature spice to go along with apple pie, some dried citrus fruits, vanilla and butterscotch.
True whiskey and Knob Creek enthusiasts are going to go nuts for this one. Knob Creek Rye is as outstanding as it is rare but today we’re lucky enough to bring to you, my own single barrel of it. This is a big gold expression of Rye that holds nothing back. On the nose, there are hints of dill, rye and essence of charred oak. On the palate, you are hit over the head with baking spice, honey and freshly baked bread. The finish is certainly a warm “Kentucky Hug” that goes on forever.
This might be both the best Whiskey under $50 and the most criminally under-priced Whiskey (not that I’m complaining). Whiskey Advocate has named this one to their 7 best under $60/bottlings, but as you can see this checks in way below. This small batch bourbon is made from barrels picked by father and son master distillers Jimmy and Eddie Russell. It’s as smooth as can be and jampacked with notes of caramel, vanilla, rye spice and burnt orange peel. Bottled at 90 Proof, this one leaves a nice, warm Kentucky hug that lingers nicely on the back palate.
As crazy as it may sound, I think the Dalmore 40 Year may be even more limited and tough to secure than the 45 year. That’s probably due to the fact that despite there being slightly more made than the 45 year, only 58 precious bottles make their way to America. That’s not a lot!! This one spent time in ex-Kentucky Bourbon American oak casks before being moved to 30-year-old Oloroso Sherry butts. Then it was finished in first-fill bourbon barrels, giving it so much dang flavor, energy and depth.
