Today, we are lucky enough to have secured a tiny allocation to offer you from one of the finest wineries in America. We’re talking about the illustrious Paul Hobbs (Robert Mondavi, Opus One and Simi alum) whose own winery has had countless praise heaped upon them from day one, including the rare-air distinction of joining wine royalty in the Robert Parker, Jr. 100-point club.
Paul Hobbs’ winery has built an extraordinary reputation for making the best of the best in Cabernet, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from some of the most exclusive, lavish sites in all of the U.S. Each vintage, Paul seemingly effortlessly manages to get the most out of the Russian River Valley, Sonoma Coast and Napa Valley AVAs making wines that uniquely exemplify each individual terroir.
Because Paul and his brother Matt haven’t been in New Jersey in forever, I figured I’d call over there and bust their chops. “When are you visiting the Garden State?”. “When are you coming out to Napa?” Touche.
We decided to meet in the middle– I don’t mean in Kansas. Instead, I was offered their new release of their Napa Valley Estate Cabernet at a “Nicholas Special Price”. Not too shabby at all.

94 Points, James Suckling
A solid cabernet with currants and berries, blue fruit and lavender. Medium-to full-bodied, solid and beautiful. Creamy and very long. Give it a year or so. Try after 2021.
92 Points, Antonio Galloni- Vinous
The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) is a gorgeous, racy wine that captures all the best the vintage has to offer within its peer group. Juicy red and purplish berry fruit, lavender and mint give the 2017 striking freshness and nuance to match its mid-weight personality. This is such a pretty and accessible wine. I would prefer to drink it over the next decade or so.

100 Pts, International Wine Report – 98 Pts, Parker’s Wine Advocate – 98 Pts, James Suckling
“The 2020 Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is truly sensational. It begins with striking aromas of fresh blackberries, blueberries and dark plums that are laced with fresh spring florals, mocha, sweet exotic spices, graphite and gravel nuances all taking shape. The palate is full-bodied and displays a remarkable combination of power and elegance throughout. This is beautifully structured and extremely expressive, as it possesses outstanding depth and concentration all they way through the long, finessed finish. Year after year, the Columbia Valley Cabernet is one of the most impressive wines, and there is no exception here, as it combines all the wonderful qualities of the 2020 vintage from Quilceda Creek into one expression. This is fantastic already and readers will be in for a real treat, as this simply marvelous wine will continue to deliver the goods for years to come.”
Winemaker Kian Tavakoli (Opus One, Clos du Val) continues to excel even while others struggle. In 2017, he still managed to deliver a beautiful and opulent Napa Valley Cabernet that’s both dark and juicy. The wine hails from both Coombsville and Rutherford, giving it distinct characteristics and a lot of drive. Deep ruby to the rim with excellent concentration, notes of Bing cherries, raspberry pie and hints of vanilla. On the palate, big wonderfully jammy fruit with young but impressive tannins and great length. The finish leaves notes of black cherry, and baked blueberry pie. Fantastic Napa value.
91 Points, Wine Enthusiast
Always the one with the most personality of the bunch, this is what Wine Enthusiast had to say about the 2021 release: “This extremely ripe and bold style of Pinot Noir will please those seeking such lushness. Dark in the glass, it begins with black cherry, toasty caramel and cola milk shake aromas.” The cool, coastal days and abundance of sunshine lines up perfectly for a wine that has a good natural acidic backbone, with bold fruit-forward flavors. In an easy 2021 vintage, Joe Wagner had a field day with this single-vineyard beauty.
This is a sensational single-vineyard Merlot made from incredibly tiny clusters, full of some of the most elegant, intensely structured fruit from high atop Sonoma Mountain. Beautiful weight and balance with aromas of blueberries, black currants, sage and a hint of cocoa. It’s got a full, plush mouthfeel, pristine and vibrant fruit and a wonderful smooth finish. Thanks to Chad’s big bet on himself, he was able to make a knockout Sonoma Mountain beauty, without the need for any middleman, helping us to enjoy one of his best creations at an outstanding price.
