Adam Tolmach went to UC Davis and studied viticulture and enology, and after graduating in 1976 he settled down on the property his grandfather bought in the Ojai Valley in 1933 to farm sweet corn and melons, selling them at a roadside stand. After two years of this satisfying, yet difficult and nearly profitless work he sought employment in his field of study switching over to wine.
So in 1983 he began planting fruit and in the nearly 40 years since then, he has achieved everything one could possibly do in the wine industry. Countless 90+ scores, winemakers who have adapted his styles of winemaking and the top restaurant accounts in the country pouring his wines.
At this point in time, nothing winemaker Adam Tolmach does surprises me but his wines are continuously outstanding. The 2018 Bien Nacido Vineyard Chardonnay is a beautiful compilation of freshness, creaminess and minerality. Lemon and citrus notes followed by a creamy vanilla mid-palate and a long fresh finish. Critics, restaurants and consumers agree, Ojai wines are always a great buy.

It’s hard to beat a great value white wine and this one is a at least a cut above the rest. One prominant industry insider called the 2022 edition, “the best white wine by any within $20/cs of this price.” It’s super crisp with a great mineral streak, and was carefully picked by hand when the temperature is coolest and is kept cool all the way into the press. From there, the effect of the mineral soil takes over, providing great finesse and freshness in every bottle. This white blend has great backbone and a lot of juicy fruit coming through behind aromas of flowers and stone fruits. At this price, it’s a no brainer.
Stephan Steinmetz is a star in the Mosel wine region. His old vines are rooted in Kimmeridgian limestone, the exact same vein of rock that winds its way from Sancerre through Chablis and Champagne to its final out-cropping here in the Obermosel. His Elbling is glorious — both completely unlike anything I’ve ever had and also eerily familiar. The color is almost clear, some might call it silver. A stunning nose of green apples and lemon peel gives way to fresh pear and bright citrus fruits on the palate. It’s a stunningly focused wine with a healthy dose of minerality and acid zip, not unlike great Sancerre/Chablis and bone dry.
This is my Burgundy discovery of the year. The 2022 Bourgogne Rouge features a perfumed and very pretty nose that reflects notes of ripe berries, violets, and a touch of earth. The fruit is so detailed and pure, a hallmark of this special vintage, with excellent energy that finishes a mile long.
Just in time, we got back Vincent Ricard’s all-time great white wine bargain. This is a crisp, clean and flat out delicious Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc. The protege to the Silex-style of Dagueneau – who over the last 15 years has produced flawless and beloved white wines that at last count were on the wine lists of over 36 Michelin-starred restaurants. This is a great house white and one that can surely hold its own with just about everything on the table.
