Inflation seems to have hit CDP more than even top-flight Bordeaux. Wines I used to recommend priced in the $30s are now in the $60s. The occasional splurge for Hommage a Jacques Perrin (I just looked into that) is going for $400! CDP in the $20s, well, those don’t even exist any more.
So in my pursuit to bring Grenache back down to reality, I had to get off the beaten trail. My pursuit led me off the coast of Italy to the large island of Sardinia. Here the Grenache grows in arid, sandy soil that forces the roots deep into the soil for resources, naturally keeping yields tiny and flavors concentrated. Then – just like the more westerly end of CDP, those vines find deep layers of limestone adding refreshing minerality.
The 2018 Mora & Memo “Nau” Cannonau 2018 is drawn from a single 30-year-old parcel on the family-owned estate. Big and brash – just like CDP can be in warmer vintages – Mora & Memo’s Cannonau (Italian for Grenache) is outstanding. Perfectly balanced with luscious red fruits, the only thing better is the price. Ours is the lowest price in the country on cases (if you can find it).
But snatch this one up now, because the critics have caught on. Ian D’Agata of Vinous recently gave this one 94 points and a glowing review. Luckily, I was already locked in for our 20 case allocation. Read the review below.. After you’ve hit the buy button.

Deep ruby-red. Aromas and flavors of red cherry, tar, smoke, and orange peel. Big juicy and dense, boasting insidious sweetness and outstanding acid-fruit balance, this finishes long and powerful. Multilayered yet very easy to drink. Well done.

“The 2020 Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is truly sensational. It begins with striking aromas of fresh blackberries, blueberries and dark plums that are laced with fresh spring florals, mocha, sweet exotic spices, graphite and gravel nuances all taking shape. The palate is full-bodied and displays a remarkable combination of power and elegance throughout. This is beautifully structured and extremely expressive, as it possesses outstanding depth and concentration all they way through the long, finessed finish. Year after year, the Columbia Valley Cabernet is one of the most impressive wines, and there is no exception here, as it combines all the wonderful qualities of the 2020 vintage from Quilceda Creek into one expression. This is fantastic already and readers will be in for a real treat, as this simply marvelous wine will continue to deliver the goods for years to come.”
Winemaker Kian Tavakoli (Opus One, Clos du Val) continues to excel even while others struggle. In 2017, he still managed to deliver a beautiful and opulent Napa Valley Cabernet that’s both dark and juicy. The wine hails from both Coombsville and Rutherford, giving it distinct characteristics and a lot of drive. Deep ruby to the rim with excellent concentration, notes of Bing cherries, raspberry pie and hints of vanilla. On the palate, big wonderfully jammy fruit with young but impressive tannins and great length. The finish leaves notes of black cherry, and baked blueberry pie. Fantastic Napa value.

The new release is here from outstanding winemaking team of Michel Rolland, Charles Thomas, Andy Erickson and David Jelenik. This one always represents one of the best quality-to-price ratios in all of Napa Cab and in the stellar 2021 vintage, this really stands out as one of the best the Valley has to offer. It’s a racy mix of Coombsville fruit from Atlas Peak that absolutely roars out of the bottle. Always one of Napa’s great bargains and a must have even as the price starts to sneak up here a little bit.

“The 2021 Malbec Reserva, from Vistalba, Lujan de Cuyo, was 60% aged in barrels for 12 months. Purple in color. The nose presents notes of fresh plum and violets, white pepper, strawberry, hints of spice and aromas from the aging process. It’s initially indulgent in the mouth, with good fat, and volume and a velvety texture. The flavors are bold and full-bodied. This 2021 overdelivers at the price.” -Vinous
