Like Quilceda Creek’s early days, Matthews Winery is the new shiny car in the lot. Established in the mid-90’s the brand has long been considered one of the state’s best wine producers but in the last half decade, they’ve been on an absolute tear, making some of the great Bordeaux Blends in the States. But unlike some of their neighbors, Matthews’ wines touch all price points and include a number of different varietals, giving superstar winemakers, Jesse Schmidt, Hal Iverson and Alex Stewart a “playground” full of possibilities and the autonomy to create incredibly unique wines in the stylistic approach of their choosing.
Hal Iverson said he believes Matthews “will have a tremendous influence on the future of Washington wine.” Schmidt added that “The potential for Matthews is limitless”. With exciting wines at incredible prices like today’s red blend and three superstar winemakers with free reign on artistic design– there’s no wonder why the future is so darn bright at Matthews Winery.

Winemaker Kian Tavakoli (Opus One, Clos du Val) continues to excel even while others struggle. In 2017, he still managed to deliver a beautiful and opulent Napa Valley Cabernet that’s both dark and juicy. The wine hails from both Coombsville and Rutherford, giving it distinct characteristics and a lot of drive. Deep ruby to the rim with excellent concentration, notes of Bing cherries, raspberry pie and hints of vanilla. On the palate, big wonderfully jammy fruit with young but impressive tannins and great length. The finish leaves notes of black cherry, and baked blueberry pie. Fantastic Napa value.
This is Joe Wagner and Quilt’s inaugural Red blend called Threadcount. It is a total knockout at the price point for this style of wine. It’s a big voluptuous wine and very fruit forward. The nose is straight up dark chocolate dipped raspberries and it tastes of fresh-baked blueberry pie, spice, and a touch of toffee. It’s the kind of quality blend that you’ve come to expect from the family behind Caymus.
It’s always nice to be in good standing with one of the most beloved wine brands in America! These won’t last long! This is an opulent, powerful dark-fruited Cabernet with tightly woven tannins, that is just raring and ready to go. Textbook, full-bodied, revved up and ready to go, this new Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet is the definition of a crowd pleaser.
