The amount of mediocre Cabs I taste in this price range is mind-boggling. With the rising costs of everything these days, most wineries don’t even produce a Cabernet in this price range anymore. Then if they do, they either make them too thin, clumsy and/or disjointed or just don’t deliver in the ‘wow’ factor department.
But the Armé Cabernet is the exception and pretty much in a league of its own– a fantastic selection from Marietta in the winery’s family series and a wine that consistently delivers an insane value. $30 Cabs usually just can’t boast this kind of aromatic flair combined with a wonderfully vibrant and rich mid-palate that finishes with such depth and structure.
For the time being, Marietta’s wines continue to be some of the best values across the board in California. Antonio Galloni really let the cat out of the bag last year when he announced that he was “completely blown away by the Marietta wines” even declaring, Marietta’s “Scot Bilbro has the magic touch when it comes to crafting wines that deliver superb quality for the money across the various tiers in this range”.
Of course, the big man himself, Robert Parker, Jr. had already beaten young Antonito to the punch, proclaiming, “One of California’s finest value wineries, Marietta Cellars has been receiving favorable reviews in this publication for many years… The production has soared since then but the consistency in quality has remained remarkably high. These are terrific offerings from this value-priced winery.”

The 2019 Armé Cabernet Sauvignon has a medium ruby-purple color and layered aromas of red and black currants, violet, iron, underbrush and mushrooms. The medium-bodied palate is pleasantly rustic and a touch chewy, with bright acidity, pretty floral perfume and an earth-laced finish.

Rounded aromas of red cherries, nutmeg and sage. Full-bodied with fine, structured tannins. A solid core of black and red fruits with lovely notes of black tea and toasted herbs. Walnut and green tobacco too. Very good length and balance. 82% cabernet sauvignon, 12% merlot, 3% malbec and 3% petit verdot.

Damien has crafted a delicious Médoc, full of character with dense black currant and cherry fruit, cedar, tobacco and wonderful complexity. It’s silky complexion is what pushes it over the edge (and, of course, the price!) It doesn’t hurt that it comes from a 95-point Left Bank vintage that the Wine Advocate declared, “outstanding.”

“Vignon’s 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape delivers even more than I hoped for based on a previous sample. Hints of garrigue, roses, cherries and raspberries appear on the nose, while the palate is full-bodied, silky and long, with an intense, almost briny finish. The assemblage is 50% Grenache, 10% each Mourvèdre and Syrah, plus smaller proportions of seven other permitted varieties, while the élevage includes foudres, demi-muids, concrete and wooden tanks, plus terracotta amphorae.”
Winemaker Pascal Sirat consistently puts out some of the best value Bordeaux in the region but he may have outdone himself in what was a stellar 2019 vintage throughout the region. Just south of Pomerol, the vines at Panchille borrow deep in the soil. The resulting wines are ripe but fresh, with an aromatic complexity and stony finish usually reserved for wine twice the price. Daniel Boulud tells me it’s been the hottest bottle of wine at Bar Boulud for over a month, so I figured I’d better hurry up and secure my allocation! Don’t miss it.
As soon as you take the first sip on this one, you can easily see the Burgundian connection. Doglia’s Ruche di Castagnole Monferrato 2022 is medium bodied with scents of fresh cut lavender. On the palate, it’s an absolute delight, full of flavor but with an acid backbone that make it perfect to pair with almost any cuisine. Notes of wild fruits and a touch of pepper are just so good. This is a silky smooth, delicious bottle of wine.
