If you want to know how I get to pick out these Private Reserve single barrels, I’ll let you in on the process. The master distiller will select his favorite 20 or 30 barrels for all of us “one’s” to select from. Obviously the first “one” to select will get the best of the best. This has been our exact situation the past few times when I selected our Knob Creek single barrel of bourbon with Master Distiller Fred Noe.
Of course, given that it’s Knob and they’re consistently excellent all 20 that I tasted were outstanding. But I don’t mess around during these kinds of tastings, and I’m pretty sure that I locked into the best of the bunch before anyone else even had a chance to taste it.
I found this one in Rickhouse 0 on floor 5.

Always like when we can bring a ‘first’ to the table and this Hungarian Red certainly fits the bill. It’s a delicate and complex volcanic wine that has a lot of rich notes of blackberries, chocolate and blue petaled flowers with a hint of pepper. This is an age-worthy beauty. Definitely worth a try as something that you’ll almost never be able to find again but will delight the true wine geek.
True whiskey and Knob Creek enthusiasts are going to go nuts for this one. Knob Creek Rye is as outstanding as it is rare but today we’re lucky enough to bring to you, my own single barrel of it. This is a big gold expression of Rye that holds nothing back. On the nose, there are hints of dill, rye and essence of charred oak. On the palate, you are hit over the head with baking spice, honey and freshly baked bread. The finish is certainly a warm “Kentucky Hug” that goes on forever.
It’s super big and lush with inviting aromas of dark cherry and plum conserve. It’s rich and dense on the palate with velvety dark chocolate notes, blueberry, blackberries, and espresso balanced by well-integrated tannins. It’s a full-bodied Paso Cab that saw 18 months in 40% new French Oak, giving it a lot of suppleness and elegance right out of the shoot.
Our third single barrel of Whistle Pig and the first time we have our hands on their 6-year PiggyBack bottling. This one leads with a nose of freshly baked pumpernickel bread, butterscotch and toffee. On the palate, I get a lot of citrus & peach with a touch of lavender & black cherry. The finish here is strong & long with spicy dried fruits and caramel notes that linger. This one was distilled in house in Vermont, and as anyone can tell you with the farm releases, they always deliver the best of punches. This one comes in at 109.8 Proof.
