In Oregon, the path to success while not easy is well trod. Make great Pinot Noir, (easier said than done, especially 30 years ago) build your winery and then finance the rest of your wine program around that.
But one winery chose a slightly different path. Always a wine lover and with two small parcels that he already owned, Ed King hit pay dirt one day while purchasing hay for his horses by discovering an ideal 600-acre cattle ranch near Eugene, Oregon.
Because their land was further south than most of the Willamette Valley wine pioneers before them, Pinot Noir might have been an easy cash cow, but Pinot Gris was the ideal grape for the terroir and climate.
Never taking the easy way out, the family committed themselves to sustainable farming, becoming the first biodynamic winery in the state — a novel concept at the time that has since become the norm for all the region’s top estates. By 1994, they had rigorously matched each tiny parcel to its perfect clone – creating the most clonally diverse soil and climate-matched vineyard in Oregon.

For years now, I’ve been absolutely delighted by the White Burgundies at Domaine Corsin. There’s really good reason for that. The Corsin’s holdings in Pouilly-Fuissé include many of the best situated sites in the appellation. This wine comes from a selection of older vines grown in these limestone soils. The current vintage is simply showing fantastic at the moment. The 2020 Corsin Domain’s Pouilly-Fuissé ‘Vieilles Vignes’ displays a bright golden hue with a hint of green. Its subtle bouquet with a woody-vanilla note enhances the slightly sharp, sophisticated fullness on the palate mingled with a generous underlying impression of toasted bread.
Every year, Pierre Sparr’s Alsacian Riesling is one of the top scoring wines in the under $20 category. There’s a consistency there and consumers know they can count on a Riesling that is aromatic, fruity, elegant, clean and vibrant. Pierre Sparr wines are extremely food-friendly especially in the widely praised 2021 vintage where quality rose to an all-time high. It’s a bone-dry beauty with layers of citrus fruits, framed by wet stone and mineral character that adds dimension.
Elena Walch’s newly released 2022 Pinot Bianco continues to be the best example of Pinot Blanc anywhere. She’s the undisputed queen. There’s so much energy in this new release. Super light in color, with a busy nose that boasts ripe aromas of citrus, granny smith apple with a hint of freshly mowed grass. Made entirely in stainless steel, the wine is expressive, fresh and finishes as clean and tight as can be. Definitely will continue the run of 90+ scores once this one is reviewed.
It’s an electric white Burgundy, with a limestone-laced aromatic profile of green apple, pear and hazelnut. Refined and high-toned, the pure, delicious fruit that is a hallmark of this terrific vintage, finishes long and fresh, with a mile-long mineral streak.
