For the last 10 to 15 years, most of the folks in the restaurant industry and myself have leaned heavily on Sancerre for great crisp, mineral whites. It’s a region that has also been so good to me, and the demand these days is through the roof, even as prices have practically doubled in the last 20 years.
But if you’ve been around for as long as I have, you remember a time in which you would only order a Sancerre at a restaurant IF they didn’t have a Pouilly-Fume because it was considered lesser than its Loire Valley neighbor. Eventually, something changed–I don’t know what it was, but some wine experts think it was as simple as Sancerre being easier to pronounce!
The Pouilly Fume I had last week was absolutely lights out. I’m telling you, it’s qualitatively excellent. It completely shames most Sancerre and does it at a price that Sancerre hasn’t seen in years. The best part is that Karine Lauverjat is actually a well-known Sancerre producer, but I actually thought their PF was a lot better this vintage.
The Lauverjat Pouilly Fume 2021 was born just across the Loire River from Sancerre, where the soil is rich with river deposits, Portlandian limestone, and Kimmerdigian limestone. It really is the triple threat of soil, and this flint influence gives the wine incredible depth and beauty. This one has it all.

“A multi-award winning Pouilly-Fumé made from old vine: average age of the vines is around 30 years. Pale yellow colour, with typical Pouilly-Fumé aromas of flint with a hint of white fruit, exotic and citrus fruits. A wonderfully well balanced, fresh and aromatic wine. Typical aroma of flint with a hint of white fruit. On the palate a pure and strong dry wine, where the individual aromas are expressed. As good as they get.”

This is a huge favorite of folks in the Red Bank area. It’s a bold, unapologetic Chardonnay with juicy notes of peach, lemon sorbet, baking spice and vanilla with a rich, creamy middle and plenty of natural acidity to balance it out. The lemon vanilla finish is perhaps the wine’s calling card or the sheer drinkability of it all. Either way, it’s a Chard that people adore. It’s no wonder Wine Enthusiast called this, “a big win for fans of this bold style”.
It’s hard to beat a great value white wine and this one is a at least a cut above the rest. One prominant industry insider called the 2022 edition, “the best white wine by any within $20/cs of this price.” It’s super crisp with a great mineral streak, and was carefully picked by hand when the temperature is coolest and is kept cool all the way into the press. From there, the effect of the mineral soil takes over, providing great finesse and freshness in every bottle. This white blend has great backbone and a lot of juicy fruit coming through behind aromas of flowers and stone fruits. At this price, it’s a no brainer.

“Soaring lemon cream aromatics accented by notes of sea spray, lemongrass and beeswax mark this coastal Chardonnay from Flowers on the Sonoma Coast. The palate is fresh and linear. Oyster shell salinity, bee pollen and grilled lemon make for a savoury balance with delicate crushed chalk minerality.”
The newly released Riesling Feinherb 2021 is a lively, juicy wine with an elegant bouquet of minerals, wet stone and ripe fruit. On the palate, the wine’s slight off-dry component is beautifully balanced by the steely acidity typical of the Mosel. Because this is freshly released, the fruit is vibrant and succulent and it comes in somewhere between off-dry and semi-sweet. It’s a great example of Riesling, especially at the price.
