Grgich was plucked from nearby Beaulieu Vineyard to craft the sensational 1969 Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon in his very first vintage at Robert Mondavi Cellars.
He was then tasked with making a Chardonnay to compete against the best of Burgundy for the 1976 Judgement of Paris. Many believed that Chardonnay in particular would be a varietal where Americans would be laughed off the stage. But as you all know the story by now, Mike Grgich’s 1973 Chateau Montelena was chosen as the best white wine in the world, sending shockwaves throughout the wine community and cementing the U.S. winemaker’s legacy amongst the world’s best.
On the heels of his big victory, he left Chateau Montelena just a year later in 1977 to start his own winery with partner Austin Hills – and named it Grgich Hills Estate. The wines have true international appeal as evidenced by their inclusion at countless state dinners including being served to Presidents Reagan and Clinton, Queen Elizabeth II and French President François Mitterrand.
The 2016 continues that bold tradition. The fifth in a truly impressive series of vintages, the 2016 Cabernet is predominantly comprised of fruit from their Yountville Estate Vineyard with a touch of estate fruit from Rutherford and Calistoga.

93 Points, Decanter
Sweet black cherry, black olive and charred red meat with graceful, enticing aromas of flowers, blackberries and blackcurrants. Clove and tobacco finish.
92 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
Blended of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot and 4% Cabernet Franc, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon has a deep garnet-black color and nose of black and red berries, earth and herbs with savory hints. The palate is medium to full-bodied, firm, chewy and lively.

This is Joe Wagner and Quilt’s inaugural Red blend called Threadcount. It is a total knockout at the price point for this style of wine. It’s a big voluptuous wine and very fruit forward. The nose is straight up dark chocolate dipped raspberries and it tastes of fresh-baked blueberry pie, spice, and a touch of toffee. It’s the kind of quality blend that you’ve come to expect from the family behind Caymus.
Winemaker Kian Tavakoli (Opus One, Clos du Val) continues to excel even while others struggle. In 2017, he still managed to deliver a beautiful and opulent Napa Valley Cabernet that’s both dark and juicy. The wine hails from both Coombsville and Rutherford, giving it distinct characteristics and a lot of drive. Deep ruby to the rim with excellent concentration, notes of Bing cherries, raspberry pie and hints of vanilla. On the palate, big wonderfully jammy fruit with young but impressive tannins and great length. The finish leaves notes of black cherry, and baked blueberry pie. Fantastic Napa value.
The newly released Fiancetto Howell Mt. Cabernet is a dream – a gorgeous, elegant dark-fruited Cabernet Sauvignon that is it picks up time in the glass, unfurls its full signature of cedar laced cassis nose and mid palate of chocolate-covered cherries and savory spices. Only four palates of this (224 cases) were made off a gorgeous, sprawling high elevation spot 1500 feet above sea level. It’s full and plush and finishes fresh and oh so long. The price is crazy for Howell Mountain Cabernet but that’s what Ry Richards and Fiancetto is all about.

“The 2020 Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is truly sensational. It begins with striking aromas of fresh blackberries, blueberries and dark plums that are laced with fresh spring florals, mocha, sweet exotic spices, graphite and gravel nuances all taking shape. The palate is full-bodied and displays a remarkable combination of power and elegance throughout. This is beautifully structured and extremely expressive, as it possesses outstanding depth and concentration all they way through the long, finessed finish. Year after year, the Columbia Valley Cabernet is one of the most impressive wines, and there is no exception here, as it combines all the wonderful qualities of the 2020 vintage from Quilceda Creek into one expression. This is fantastic already and readers will be in for a real treat, as this simply marvelous wine will continue to deliver the goods for years to come.”
