What I am allowed to share about this wine is that it comes from a vineyard in Napa that is often referred to as “the best vineyard that most people don’t know”. A true hidden gem in the coveted Stag’s Leap District, one of the oldest in all of Napa with roots tracing back over 135 years.
I had been told by Ry that the Cabernet plucked from this vineyard was liquid gold– but I didn’t know he meant literally. The winery who owns the vineyard charges $233/btl for their single-vineyard Cabernet, a pretty penny and also one of the stranger retail numbers I’ve seen. Why not $225? $235? Ehh, what do I know?
Anyhow, that wine is only made in super limited quantities and only distributed across an exclusive list of dedicated wine club members, so it usually never sees the light of day. The fruit taken off the vineyard is incredible, clean – vibrant – succulent Cabernet Sauvignon that is the kind of fruit a winemaker would love to have at their disposal.
So when some super seconds (the juice that didn’t quite make the cut) was offered to Ry from this small family-owned winery, he jumped on it– and a few weeks later, we were his first call.
The 2019 Fiancetto Stags Leap Cabernet Sauvignon is easily the highest pedigree bottling of Fiancetto to date– the product of a special deal made by an insider with a lot of the right kinds of connections.
Opulent and decadent, it’s a sensational full-bodied Cabernet with a beautiful dark purple hue, aromas of violets, cocoa and juicy black fruits. Any other winery would simply bottle this as their more basic Stag’s Leap Cabernet and slap a $125 price sticker on it.

This is a sensational single-vineyard Merlot made from incredibly tiny clusters, full of some of the most elegant, intensely structured fruit from high atop Sonoma Mountain. Beautiful weight and balance with aromas of blueberries, black currants, sage and a hint of cocoa. It’s got a full, plush mouthfeel, pristine and vibrant fruit and a wonderful smooth finish. Thanks to Chad’s big bet on himself, he was able to make a knockout Sonoma Mountain beauty, without the need for any middleman, helping us to enjoy one of his best creations at an outstanding price.
Winemaker Pascal Sirat consistently puts out some of the best value Bordeaux in the region but he may have outdone himself in what was a stellar 2019 vintage throughout the region. Just south of Pomerol, the vines at Panchille borrow deep in the soil. The resulting wines are ripe but fresh, with an aromatic complexity and stony finish usually reserved for wine twice the price. Daniel Boulud tells me it’s been the hottest bottle of wine at Bar Boulud for over a month, so I figured I’d better hurry up and secure my allocation! Don’t miss it.

“The 2020 Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is truly sensational. It begins with striking aromas of fresh blackberries, blueberries and dark plums that are laced with fresh spring florals, mocha, sweet exotic spices, graphite and gravel nuances all taking shape. The palate is full-bodied and displays a remarkable combination of power and elegance throughout. This is beautifully structured and extremely expressive, as it possesses outstanding depth and concentration all they way through the long, finessed finish. Year after year, the Columbia Valley Cabernet is one of the most impressive wines, and there is no exception here, as it combines all the wonderful qualities of the 2020 vintage from Quilceda Creek into one expression. This is fantastic already and readers will be in for a real treat, as this simply marvelous wine will continue to deliver the goods for years to come.”

The new release is here from outstanding winemaking team of Michel Rolland, Charles Thomas, Andy Erickson and David Jelenik. This one always represents one of the best quality-to-price ratios in all of Napa Cab and in the stellar 2021 vintage, this really stands out as one of the best the Valley has to offer. It’s a racy mix of Coombsville fruit from Atlas Peak that absolutely roars out of the bottle. Always one of Napa’s great bargains and a must have even as the price starts to sneak up here a little bit.
