If you like inky black, powerhouse red wines, you should be very excited about the newest release from Hervé Fabre, the magnificent Fabre-Montmayou Mendoza Malbec Gran Reserva 2016. Wines from 100 year old vines that at a Tuesday night price are rare and the only one that I know of comes from our great friend Hervé.
When Hervé first emigrated from Bordeaux to Mendoza in the late ‘80s, he was surprised to find that nearly every other investor in Mendoza’s wine renaissance was buying undeveloped land and planting new vineyards. They were ignoring the old vineyards of head-trained Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon that had been established a hundred years earlier by earlier French immigrants. Well, our friend Hervé quietly bought them up.
None are more powerful or enticing then the 2016 Gran Reserva Malbec, a black, deep, purple-fruited knockout! Only ancient vines, up to 100 years old can render this unique combo of power and finesse, this is impressive wine! The Gran Riserva Malbec is a big boy that can dance and will be the perfect foil to any grilled hunk of meat you decide to cook this fall.
At $21, it packs an incredible punch, delivering power and concentration that most wines fail to achieve at twice this price. There are 25 cases to sell, don’t miss it.

92 Points, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous:
“Bright, dark ruby. Perfumed, slightly high-toned aromas of blackberry, licorice, wild herbs and black pepper. Dense, brooding black fruit and licorice flavors show good peppery lift and energy without going green. This wine stands out for its mineral and violet verve and its definition of flavor, and possesses the spine to evolve slowly. These Bodegas Fabre wines are all quite suave and well-made, and this 2016 Malbec is another superb example of its cooler vintage.”
Only ancient vines, up to 100 years old can render this unique combo of power and finesse, this is impressive wine! Our friend, Hervé continues to amaze– vintage after vintage.

91 Points, Wine Enthusiast
Always the one with the most personality of the bunch, this is what Wine Enthusiast had to say about the 2021 release: “This extremely ripe and bold style of Pinot Noir will please those seeking such lushness. Dark in the glass, it begins with black cherry, toasty caramel and cola milk shake aromas.” The cool, coastal days and abundance of sunshine lines up perfectly for a wine that has a good natural acidic backbone, with bold fruit-forward flavors. In an easy 2021 vintage, Joe Wagner had a field day with this single-vineyard beauty.
In the 2020 vintage in Gevrey-Chambertin, yields were super low and temperatures were hotter than most Burgundian winemakers are accustomed. Many picked too late when the sugars were high and the fruit really ripe, but that was not the play. Still, Ann remained as cool in those hot temps as she did so many years ago in Napa, concentrating more on acid levels than sugars and picking at just the right time. This wine is absolutely singing – it’s an age-worthy beauty that should be even better in 4-7 years.
94 Points, Tasting Panel
This is a really exciting new release in the collection of single-vineyards from the Wagner Family, and arguably the most interesting one of the bunch. This is the only Pinot Noir in the Caymus collection that has the advantage of being from a natural Pinot Noir haven in the Russian River Valley. Dairyman Vineyard’s proximity to the pacific ocean, with its morning fog and afternoon coastal breezes allows for an even and elongated growing season, with super concentrated and expressive grape clusters that help make this Dijon clone Pinot Noir one that you need.
Winemaker Pascal Sirat consistently puts out some of the best value Bordeaux in the region but he may have outdone himself in what was a stellar 2019 vintage throughout the region. Just south of Pomerol, the vines at Panchille borrow deep in the soil. The resulting wines are ripe but fresh, with an aromatic complexity and stony finish usually reserved for wine twice the price. Daniel Boulud tells me it’s been the hottest bottle of wine at Bar Boulud for over a month, so I figured I’d better hurry up and secure my allocation! Don’t miss it.
