Many of the top wines of the Alto Adige actually come from Pinot Grigio’s less popular cousin – Pinot Bianco. I’ve done this a million times – brown bag a bottle of each and taste test blind with your favorite Pinot Grigio drinker. A well-made Bianco wins every time. Once you’ve tasted their light, peachy flavors it’s easy to see why.
Elena Walch is arguably the queen of a region that is not short on amazing winegrowers. She bought and runs the winery with her daughters. It is an entirely woman owned and operated winery.. and they are busy! Each vintage, the trio makes over 30 different wines! Gewurztraminer, Lagrein, Pinot Bianco, Muller Thurgau – just to name a few.
And their wines are annually recognized as some of the best white wines in the world. Leading the charge is their flagship white, “Beyond the Clouds” which has garnered 98 point scores four years running and has helped her extend her reach well beyond the tiny Italian town.
But it’s her Pinot Bianco that may be the best example of the varietal I’ve ever had. Bristling with energy and super light in color, with a seductive nose that boasts ripe aromas of citrus, green apple and a fresh floral bouquet. Made entirely in stainless steel, the wine is expressive, fresh and finishes as clean and tight as can be.

92 Points, James Suckling
This smells as inviting as a spring meadow, but also has some nice white-fruit aromas, then it turns quite cool and sleek on the palate. However, that only makes it more refreshing. Long, very clean and quite mineral finish. Drink now.

This is an extremely versatile wine, delicious as an aperitif as well as an accompaniment for fish and poultry dishes
Just in time, we got back Vincent Ricard’s all-time great white wine bargain. This is a crisp, clean and flat out delicious Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc. The protege to the Silex-style of Dagueneau – who over the last 15 years has produced flawless and beloved white wines that at last count were on the wine lists of over 36 Michelin-starred restaurants. This is a great house white and one that can surely hold its own with just about everything on the table.
2022 was an absolutely perfect vintage in this respect and unfortunately, I think it will be one of the last, if not THE last. As winegrower Jean-Marc Brocard reported to Decanter: “When we taste the wines, we feel that the balance between acidity and ripeness is very good. It’s a classic style of Chablis. In the end, even after such a heat during summertime, we stay in a cool year reference.” He also alluded to the ageability of the vintage, saying “Let’s give them time, we must let nature do its work.”
The newly released Riesling Feinherb 2021 is a lively, juicy wine with an elegant bouquet of minerals, wet stone and ripe fruit. On the palate, the wine’s slight off-dry component is beautifully balanced by the steely acidity typical of the Mosel. Because this is freshly released, the fruit is vibrant and succulent and it comes in somewhere between off-dry and semi-sweet. It’s a great example of Riesling, especially at the price.
Year in, year out Château Turcaud produces one of the best white wine values in the world. It’s long been found on Michelin-starred wine lists in Paris and we’ve had it at the restaurant since Day 1. If you’ve ever tried this stunning, classic Bordeaux of Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Sauvignon Gris and Muscadelle, then you know why. The new 2022 vintage has arrived and it’s beaming with energy and pure stone fruits. This is a beauty as always.
