We know by now that 2018 was a historic vintage for DuMol and Andy Smith. Jeb Dunnuck who has been reviewing Dumol wines for two decades declared, “This was easily the finest set of releases I have tasted from winemaker Andy Smith.” Vinous chimed in, calling Smith’s 2018’s “vivid and super expressive.”
But it was the most notable critic, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, who took it even further declaring, “Some of the 2018’s are potential career wines and the wines from DuMol are the best I have ever tasted.”
It’s true. The 2018 DuMol Napa Valley Cabernet that Smith crafted is otherworldly. It’s highly perfumed with intense notes of a medley of dark fruits: wild blackberry, plum, huckleberry, with a touch of sage & spice. The fresh fruits parade continues on the palate with black cherries and crushed cassis giving way to more complex notes of tobacco and dark chocolate.
I think what’s most mesmerizing – and frankly so enjoyable – about the wine is it’s perfect marriage of over-the-top Napa opulence and a much more modern style to the winemaking. It harkens back to the glory days of big, bold wines while actually being drinkable.
When we sent an email for this wine a month ago, I predicted it would be near the top of Top 100 lists this year. Turns out I was right! My last 30 bottles are up for grabs for Wine Enthusiast’s #7 Cellar Selection in the World of 2021.

98 Points (Cellar Selection), Wine Enthusiast
Highly perfumed, exotic floral aromas intersperse with blackberry, plum, sweet thyme, and spiced clove. The palate is fruit-focused with black cherry and dark cassis notes alongside a sense of crushed stone. Cedar, pencil lead, and sweet tobacco notes shine through with a touch of bittersweet cocoa. Power matched with elegance offers a balanced opulence with myriad nuances.

#3 Wine Spectator Top 100 Wines of 2021
96 Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate – 95 Points, Wine Spectator
We are one of the very few folks who have Wine Spectator’s #3 Wine of the Year. This is definitely not one to miss. The 2016 vintage showcases this prized vineyard in all its glory; notes of wild black fruit, thyme, mint, eucalyptus, and bay are lifted and enjoyed with the polished tannin and mouthwatering freshness of this wine. Regarded as one of the best vintages in the last few decades, the 2016 Martha’s Vineyard has been aged to perfection for immediate enjoyment at release and will continue to reward for the next 20+ years.
This is Joe Wagner and Quilt’s inaugural Red blend called Threadcount. It is a total knockout at the price point for this style of wine. It’s a big voluptuous wine and very fruit forward. The nose is straight up dark chocolate dipped raspberries and it tastes of fresh-baked blueberry pie, spice, and a touch of toffee. It’s the kind of quality blend that you’ve come to expect from the family behind Caymus.
#24 Wine of the Year (2022), Wine Spectator
92 Points, Wine Spectator – 91 Points, James Suckling
“This supple red shows a core of cherry and plum fruit allied to olive, juniper and tobacco notes. Delivers well-integrated tannins and acidic structure, lingering nicely on the finish.”
90-92 Pts, Parker’s Wine Advocate – 91 Pts (Editors’ Choice), Wine Enthusiast – 91 Pts, Decanter
The wines get consistent high praise but 2018 is truly something special. 90-92 from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. 91 points and an Editor’s Choice designation from Wine Enthusiast. 91 more from Decanter who provides “There is so much to enjoy in the smaller appellations this year. Drinking Window 2022 – 2031” and another 90 point score from James Suckling. This is a home run value – especially for the price.
