The Russian River today is almost synonymous with the best Pinot and Chardonnay in the country but it wasn’t always so. When David Bynum and wife Dorothy first purchased their 83-acre ranch in 1971 – the area was mostly overrun with high-producing varieties of cheap Merlot grown in prolific quantities.
But Bynum and team had a different vision. He wanted to create the best wines possible, not what would be easy to sell on the bulk market. So in 1973 he single-handedly set in motion a new standard in RRV single vineyard Pinot & Chardonnay to this day by bottling the first one ever. About that very first vintage – Davis was coy, it was “really good, surprisingly good” he said.
His pioneering spirit didn’t stop there and he eventually built a winemaking dream team to help support his vision. First he hired Gary Farrell to head up the continued improvement of his single-vineyard Pinot Program. Not only did Gary stop at nothing to bring Davis Bynum wines to the absolute forefront of quality, as you probably know by now, he did ok when he hung up his own shingle.
When Gary left, Davis and company filled his large footsteps with a winemaking icon in David Ramey whose hands are all over today’s single-vineyard Chardonnay stunner.

“The 2018 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard marks the beginning of winemaker Joe Nielsen’s tenure at the winery. Pouring a medium yellow with a light golden hue, it’s most reserved of the flight aromatically at the moment, with yellow chamomile flowers, ripe peach, beeswax, and white flowers. Full-bodied, it retains excellent tension and focus on the palate, with apricot, orange zest, and a savory finish with a bit of spice. I suspect this will come around and open with time. Drink 2024-2030.” -Jeb Dunnuck
Just in time, we got back Vincent Ricard’s all-time great white wine bargain. This is a crisp, clean and flat out delicious Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc. The protege to the Silex-style of Dagueneau – who over the last 15 years has produced flawless and beloved white wines that at last count were on the wine lists of over 36 Michelin-starred restaurants. This is a great house white and one that can surely hold its own with just about everything on the table.
It’s hard to beat a great value white wine and this one is a at least a cut above the rest. One prominant industry insider called the 2022 edition, “the best white wine by any within $20/cs of this price.” It’s super crisp with a great mineral streak, and was carefully picked by hand when the temperature is coolest and is kept cool all the way into the press. From there, the effect of the mineral soil takes over, providing great finesse and freshness in every bottle. This white blend has great backbone and a lot of juicy fruit coming through behind aromas of flowers and stone fruits. At this price, it’s a no brainer.
It’s an electric white Burgundy, with a limestone-laced aromatic profile of green apple, pear and hazelnut. Refined and high-toned, the pure, delicious fruit that is a hallmark of this terrific vintage, finishes long and fresh, with a mile-long mineral streak.
