Every once in a while, one of those ‘no brainer’ offers pops up. One of those where every question you have is emphatically answered and all that’s left is to hit the ‘Buy the Case’ button and await your wine. That’s today to a T. This is an Italian cult winery.
Today’s wine is always one of the best white wines I try any given year. It’s flat out delicious. This years’ rendition appears to be another beauty, with the wine being recognized last week for the 2nd straight year in Eric Asimov’s $20 under $20 ‘Top Wines of Summer’ series.
Asimov called it, “so good and so reasonably priced that I regularly tout its virtues.” Ian D’Agata, the long-term Italian specialist for Vinous took it a step further when he declared for all to read, “let me be clear: I think it is probably Italy’s single greatest white wine buy.” And while I’m torn, and don’t think I can take away that particular crown from Domenico Almondo, for the price, there is simply no denying just how great ColleStefano’s Verdicchio really is.
Led by owner Fabio Marchionni, ColleStefano has earned an incredible reputation both locally and internationally. They even are referred to as, “”The gem of Verdicchio di Matelica”. As Vinous points out, “[Marchionni’s]’s Verdicchio di Matelica is not just mineral and steely, but ages extremely well too (ten plus years).”

Sonoma Coast is well-known as a cool-climate region, perfect for growing Chardonnay. That’s why it’s such a big deal for Route Stock to transition over for the first time from Carnernos over to here. The newly released 2022 beams freshness and comes packed with a delightful energy in its youth. It has a pale straw color with lime hues. The aromas are of honeysuckle, orange blossom and creme brulee with layers of vanilla and a hint of toffee. The palate is lively yet soft with flavors of lemon cream pie and merange.
92 Points (Best Buy), Wine Enthusiast – 90 Points, James Suckling
The winery could never expected their Tuscan Vermentino would become as integral as it has – even 25 years later, it’s still a key piece of the puzzle for Campo Maccione. It’s an unassuming wine with great viscosity and bright, savory flavors that way overdelivers for the price. James Suckling agreed, as did Wine Enthusiast. Suckling gave it a 90 and deemed it “an interesting take on Tuscan Vermentino.” Wine Enthusiast took it up a few notches, attaching a coveted ‘Best Buy’ designate to the wine along with a 92-point review for the wine “with a sophisticated restraint.”
From just west of Sancerre, Vincent’s vines are tended organically in flint-laden, calcareous soil which lends a great brightness to the wine. The wine is crisp and aromatic Sauvignon, and is a superb choice for a “cocktail” wine, as an aperitif or to accompany just about anything from sea.
Year in, year out Château Turcaud produces one of the best white wine values in the world. It’s long been found on Michelin-starred wine lists in Paris and we’ve had it at the restaurant since Day 1. If you’ve ever tried this stunning, classic Bordeaux of Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Sauvignon Gris and Muscadelle, then you know why. The new 2022 vintage has arrived and it’s beaming with energy and pure stone fruits. This is a beauty as always.
