The 2020 Franc Mayne Saint-Emilion Grand Cru is the highest ever rated for the winery, but could also be a foreshadowing of what’s to come. The Chateau which saw a renaissance starting with their 2005 sale, has had an influx of money poured in since the Savare family took over in 2018.
The founder of a large French digital security firm, Jean-Pierre Savare has poured a lot of time and money into the Chateau in his quest to see it ascend to the very top of the Grand Cru Classe. There was a huge vineyard renovation in an effort to bring out the richness of the different soil types, and to develop the wines’ style towards a greater expression of the terroir. Needless to say, the move has paid off.
For the last few vintages they’ve been on a complete tear, but nothing quite on the level of 2020 where they delivered Vinous’ top QPR value in all of Bordeaux with a perfectly balanced masterpiece that I would have to think is the very best under $50 bottle of the vintage. Antonio Galloni thought so, and he tasted over 800 from the vintage. I’ve probably worked my way through 100 or so of the 2020s so far, and I can tell you that apart from the big boys, nobody is touching this for the price.

96 Points, Antonio Galloni – Vinous
The 2020 Franc Mayne is dense, resonant and beautifully explosive in the glass. Sumptuous dark red/purplish fruit, rose petals, mint and lavender all saturate the palate. The heady Saint-Emilion really delivers the goods. There’s plenty of energy and tension to balance the more forward nature of the Merlot. Superb.

The 2020 Château Franc Mayne is a dense, rich, powerful Saint-Emilion based mostly on Merlot, although it includes a splash of Cabernet Franc. Lots of ripe black fruits, iodine, iron, and leafy herb notes define the nose, and it’s medium to full-bodied, with a rich, dense mid-palate, ripe tannins, and just a mouth-filling, satisfying style that should keep for two decades or more.

Anne Sery describes her Trousse Chemise Cabernets as an ode to the Left Bank and her winemaking roots. It’s a beautiful and fresh Cabernet with aromas that leap from the glass with of black raspberry, violets, and creme de liquor notes. The mouth gives generous amounts of juicy black fruits at the core with hints of baking spice and a smooth, savory finish. This is a terrific partner for just about anything from hard cheese, to poultry, summer salads, you name it!

“The 2020 Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is truly sensational. It begins with striking aromas of fresh blackberries, blueberries and dark plums that are laced with fresh spring florals, mocha, sweet exotic spices, graphite and gravel nuances all taking shape. The palate is full-bodied and displays a remarkable combination of power and elegance throughout. This is beautifully structured and extremely expressive, as it possesses outstanding depth and concentration all they way through the long, finessed finish. Year after year, the Columbia Valley Cabernet is one of the most impressive wines, and there is no exception here, as it combines all the wonderful qualities of the 2020 vintage from Quilceda Creek into one expression. This is fantastic already and readers will be in for a real treat, as this simply marvelous wine will continue to deliver the goods for years to come.”

The oft 100-point winemaker, Jayson Woodbridge had this to say when tasting his 2021 ‘Stargazing’ Sonoma Pinot: “The wine is vibrant and complex with subtle dark fruits and berries, grandmother’s cherry pie, minerals, and a slight touch of rain-soaked earth, intertwined with a balance and very pleasing easy-going luxury. Should have been priced higher but what the hell.” I have no doubt this clerical error will be addressed in the vintages moving forward. But for now, this is a cult Pinot for under $100/bottle.
This is a sensational single-vineyard Merlot made from incredibly tiny clusters, full of some of the most elegant, intensely structured fruit from high atop Sonoma Mountain. Beautiful weight and balance with aromas of blueberries, black currants, sage and a hint of cocoa. It’s got a full, plush mouthfeel, pristine and vibrant fruit and a wonderful smooth finish. Thanks to Chad’s big bet on himself, he was able to make a knockout Sonoma Mountain beauty, without the need for any middleman, helping us to enjoy one of his best creations at an outstanding price.
