Chateau de Pitray is a legitimate castle exactly in the manner in which you imagine Bordeaux Chateau to be. Despite a quite large property, grapes are carefully tended on a fraction of the grounds.
As 25th Generation Owner, Jean de Boigne, explains it, “The estate has been in my family for more than 600 years now. Before America was discovered, my family was here. My mom’s name is Pitray, and I’m the 25th generation owner of Château Pitray.” His ancestor, Simard de Pitray fought alongside General Lafayette and George Washington.
The prices here are just ridiculously low. As winemaker Jean de Boigne told us about his goals for the future: “It is to take the key of Pitray from my mom and bring it to my kids. I’m not here to make money. I’m here to pass it to the next generation.”
And the other factor is simple real estate. Castillon sits on the same limestone plateau a bit to the south and east of Saint-Émilion. Recent prices on a hectare eighteen thousand Euros. Six kilometers away, ten times that!

This grand chateau on its hillside surveys a 150-acre vineyard. The top wine from the estate, this is mainly wood aged, giving polish as well as perfumed black-currant fruitiness. With its ripe tannins, the wine will easily age. Drink from 2023.

This is good quality, stretching out in the mouth with tannins that are fully supportive of the project, not getting in the way but cheerleading as the fruit takes its first steps. The oft 100-point winemaker, Jayson Woodbridge had this to say when tasting his 2021 ‘Stargazing’ Sonoma Pinot: “The wine is vibrant and complex with subtle dark fruits and berries, grandmother’s cherry pie, minerals, and a slight touch of rain-soaked earth, intertwined with a balance and very pleasing easy-going luxury. Should have been priced higher but what the hell.” I have no doubt this clerical error will be addressed in the vintages moving forward. But for now, this is a cult Pinot for under $100/bottle.

“Vignon’s 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape delivers even more than I hoped for based on a previous sample. Hints of garrigue, roses, cherries and raspberries appear on the nose, while the palate is full-bodied, silky and long, with an intense, almost briny finish. The assemblage is 50% Grenache, 10% each Mourvèdre and Syrah, plus smaller proportions of seven other permitted varieties, while the élevage includes foudres, demi-muids, concrete and wooden tanks, plus terracotta amphorae.”

“The 2020 Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is truly sensational. In the 2020 vintage in Gevrey-Chambertin, yields were super low and temperatures were hotter than most Burgundian winemakers are accustomed. Many picked too late when the sugars were high and the fruit really ripe, but that was not the play. Still, Ann remained as cool in those hot temps as she did so many years ago in Napa, concentrating more on acid levels than sugars and picking at just the right time. This wine is absolutely singing – it’s an age-worthy beauty that should be even better in 4-7 years.
