The saying goes, “when in Rome, do what the Romans do.” When I was there, you better believe I did just that.
Of course, with an unwavering affinity for Pizza, I found myself looking for the best square slices I could find throughout the city. When sitting down to order a wine to enjoy with the pizza, I’d always ask the waiter for a really good, “vini bianchi” a white wine of their choosing, and more often than not, I was served a Frascati.
If you don’t know what Frascati is, there’s probably a good reason. Romans are very picky with their wines and when they love something, they tend to hold onto it and drink it for themselves instead of exporting it! For Romans, that white wine is Frascati. And for my Italian winemaking friends in Rome, Lazio and the neighboring towns, the Frascati of choice usually comes from Casale Marchese.
Even though Marchese’s Frascati’s can be had for the same price as the others, texturally, I don’t think any come close to this elevated experience. That’s why Luca Maroni gushed over the estate, calling their Frascati ‘the top in the appellation in terms of aromatic clarity, palatal softness and extractive concentration.” He also gave the 2021 release a 93-point score – a previously unheard of score for this ‘simple table wine’.

93 Points, Luca Maroni
Wines with very distinctive sensory traits is what defines Casale Marchese. His Frascati is at the top of the appellation in terms of aromatic clarity, palatal softness and extractive concentration. A champion who illustrates Roman typical-ness with their concentration, with their absolutely silky palate. Bravo!

We’re nearing the end of what was a flawlessly crafted, high energy coastal Chardonnay release from one of California’s hottest spots. It’s still every bit as bright and refreshing as you could want and it hits with clean, pristine green apple fruits, pears and citrus notes with a hint of that limestone-influenced minerality. It’s a fantastic wine for all seasons, the perfect pair with mixed seafood, summer tomatoes, corn and freshly caught fish.
It’s hard to beat a great value white wine and this one is a at least a cut above the rest. One prominant industry insider called the 2022 edition, “the best white wine by any within $20/cs of this price.” It’s super crisp with a great mineral streak, and was carefully picked by hand when the temperature is coolest and is kept cool all the way into the press. From there, the effect of the mineral soil takes over, providing great finesse and freshness in every bottle. This white blend has great backbone and a lot of juicy fruit coming through behind aromas of flowers and stone fruits. At this price, it’s a no brainer.
From just west of Sancerre, Vincent’s vines are tended organically in flint-laden, calcareous soil which lends a great brightness to the wine. The wine is crisp and aromatic Sauvignon, and is a superb choice for a “cocktail” wine, as an aperitif or to accompany just about anything from sea.
Sonoma Coast is well-known as a cool-climate region, perfect for growing Chardonnay. That’s why it’s such a big deal for Route Stock to transition over for the first time from Carnernos over to here. The newly released 2022 beams freshness and comes packed with a delightful energy in its youth. It has a pale straw color with lime hues. The aromas are of honeysuckle, orange blossom and creme brulee with layers of vanilla and a hint of toffee. The palate is lively yet soft with flavors of lemon cream pie and merange.
