Burgundy collectors are finally getting wise to some of the best wines for the money in the whole region. Those wines are being made at Ann Colgin’s Camille Giroud estate. I know that collector’s have started to notice, because routinely people taste their wines at the restaurant & immediately ask me if they can buy a case. The best part is when I tell them the price! Most of the time these are fine burgundy drinkers that are used to paying 2 or 3 times that!
Not sure if I had anything to do with Ann buying the domain (I certainly haven’t received a commission check) but I do always get a healthy allocation.
Unfortunately, we’ve been out of them for a while, but great things (like collector Red Burgundy) are well worth the wait. I just got a few cases in from Giroud of the 2018 G-C, and displayed just as much class as I remembered.
If you’re unfamiliar with the 2018 vintage, it’s one that Wine Enthusiast called, “surprisingly good” – a sentiment that I think is shared by many, who weren’t expecting a classic vintage due to a very hot summer.
While the summer may have taken some cellaring years away, what heat also brings is full maturity to the grapes, giving them soaring aromatics, as well as juicy concentration and depth. It’s an excellent trade off if you ask me, and the very best producers like CG have no trouble bringing elegance and finesse to their 2018s. This is one you need. Just make sure you drink it in the next 20 years as opposed to the next 30… if we all make it that far!

Not Eligible for Futher Discount-From famed winemaker, Robert Foley comes an absolute delight of a bottle of wine. A seamless Bordeaux blend of 80% Cabernet, 17% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot that is incredibly smoothly now but should have another decade easy of prime drinking. It is the definition of a Saturday Night bottle of wine. One to cherish for a special occasion.
This is a sensational single-vineyard Merlot made from incredibly tiny clusters, full of some of the most elegant, intensely structured fruit from high atop Sonoma Mountain. Beautiful weight and balance with aromas of blueberries, black currants, sage and a hint of cocoa. It’s got a full, plush mouthfeel, pristine and vibrant fruit and a wonderful smooth finish. Thanks to Chad’s big bet on himself, he was able to make a knockout Sonoma Mountain beauty, without the need for any middleman, helping us to enjoy one of his best creations at an outstanding price.
90-92 Pts, Parker’s Wine Advocate – 91 Pts (Editors’ Choice), Wine Enthusiast – 91 Pts, Decanter
The wines get consistent high praise but 2018 is truly something special. 90-92 from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. 91 points and an Editor’s Choice designation from Wine Enthusiast. 91 more from Decanter who provides “There is so much to enjoy in the smaller appellations this year. Drinking Window 2022 – 2031” and another 90 point score from James Suckling. This is a home run value – especially for the price.
The 2021 Napa Valley East side Cuvee is an instant classic. From the first whiff to the moment it hits the lips, its clear that this is a fabulously concentrated, serious wine: black in color, and featuring aromas of cassis, cedar and chocolate-tinged purple fruit. The mouthfeel is plush and voluptuous with a firm, solid finish that speaks to its potential for considerable aging.
