Robert Parker, Jr. said of Jorge Ordonez, “his legacy in the history of quality wine from Spain is enormous and unequaled by any importer.” But the Wine Spectator may have hit the nail on the head: “Jorge Ordonez is responsible for elevating unheralded regions to international stardom” – finding incredible wines at incredible prices that often put many famous and much more expensive wines to shame.
Today’s 93-point $20 Tinta de Toro is case in point. While most of Europe’s vineyards were ravished by phylloxera, a few select regions – usually looking more like deserts than vineyards – were spared. It was those ancient vineyard sources that blew Jorge away at first site. Huge, gnarled, trunks burrow deep into the soil to struggle to find enough water to survive for over 100 years.
That struggle results in tiny berries and consequently enormous concentration of flavor. Today’s 93-point Triton takes that intense style even further than it’s ever been taken before. Jeb Dunnuck raved about it, calling it a rocking and powerful wine loaded with notions of blackcurrants, dark chocolate, and licorice. At $20/btl or $18 when you mix and match a case, this is a screaming good deal.
A great compliment to outdoor barbeque and grilled meats, or just such an interesting, unique and delicious wine that you might want it slightly chilled in a glass with nothing else. Either way, not to be missed!

Made from 100% Tinta de Toro aged a year in used barrels (and some demi-muids), the 2017 Tritón.. is a rich, powerful wine loaded with notions of blackcurrants, dark chocolate, licorice, crushed rocks, and crushed violets. It’s full-bodied, has impressive depth of fruit, sweet tannins, and a great finish. It’s a rocking wine that can be drunk today or cellared for 15 years or more.

“Vignon’s 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape delivers even more than I hoped for based on a previous sample. Hints of garrigue, roses, cherries and raspberries appear on the nose, while the palate is full-bodied, silky and long, with an intense, almost briny finish. The assemblage is 50% Grenache, 10% each Mourvèdre and Syrah, plus smaller proportions of seven other permitted varieties, while the élevage includes foudres, demi-muids, concrete and wooden tanks, plus terracotta amphorae.”
The 2021 Napa Valley East side Cuvee is an instant classic. From the first whiff to the moment it hits the lips, its clear that this is a fabulously concentrated, serious wine: black in color, and featuring aromas of cassis, cedar and chocolate-tinged purple fruit. The mouthfeel is plush and voluptuous with a firm, solid finish that speaks to its potential for considerable aging.
With seemingly infinite access to some of the absolute very best vineyards in the most choice AVAs in the valley, the Wagner’s set out to make Quilt– a Cabernet blend from a patchwork of the top sites in Napa (Oakville, St Helena, Atlas Peak, Coombsville, Calistoga, and Howell Mountain.) The brand new 2021 edition is a beauty – deeply concentrated, rich and a truly show stopping Cabernet. It’s a dark, hedonistic blend that combines elegance with power and pairs the two together effortlessly.
91 Points, Wine Enthusiast
Always the one with the most personality of the bunch, this is what Wine Enthusiast had to say about the 2021 release: “This extremely ripe and bold style of Pinot Noir will please those seeking such lushness. Dark in the glass, it begins with black cherry, toasty caramel and cola milk shake aromas.” The cool, coastal days and abundance of sunshine lines up perfectly for a wine that has a good natural acidic backbone, with bold fruit-forward flavors. In an easy 2021 vintage, Joe Wagner had a field day with this single-vineyard beauty.
