Owner/winemaker, Joe Wagner chose the name Belle Glos to honor his grandmother, Lorna Belle Glos Wagner. Lorna was a co-founder of Caymus Vineyards along with her son Chuck and was an inspirational figure to Joe and an avid lover of Pinot Noir.
Though she wasn’t around to see her grandson’s Pinot Noir project, there’s little doubt she would’ve loved the timeless terroir-driven classics that Joe and team cook up each vintage. Last year’s iteration of the “Clark & Telephone” was a huge success with an immediate sellout before it could even get rated. But after the #11 spot for its cousin, Las Alturas Vineyard’s PN, I expect this will be rated and rated quite high.
Thanks to our great standing with the family behind Caymus, we’re able to secure this rare Santa Maria Valley small lot bottling before the big scores roll in once again.
Ruby to the rim the Clark & Telephone opens with inviting aromas of crushed cherries, cranberry and raspberry jam, cedar and cinnamon. It’s bold and full-bodied, especially for a Pinot Noir with juicy notes of cherry pie, blueberries and blackberry and a silky texture with deep, rich undertones that leave a wonderful aftertaste after a nice long finish.

At J Vineyards, Nicole is nothing short of a magician, making 30 different skus or more each vintage between her Pinots, Chardonnays, and Sparkling wines. For the vineyard’s flagship Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, up to 100 individual small lots are combined to make this great wine. Somehow, the blend is effortless–a quintessential RRV Pinot that has those soaring aromatics, bright red fruits, clove, and nutmeg spice with perfect balance.
Anne Sery describes her Trousse Chemise Cabernets as an ode to the Left Bank and her winemaking roots. It’s a beautiful and fresh Cabernet with aromas that leap from the glass with of black raspberry, violets, and creme de liquor notes. The mouth gives generous amounts of juicy black fruits at the core with hints of baking spice and a smooth, savory finish. This is a terrific partner for just about anything from hard cheese, to poultry, summer salads, you name it!
With seemingly infinite access to some of the absolute very best vineyards in the most choice AVAs in the valley, the Wagner’s set out to make Quilt– a Cabernet blend from a patchwork of the top sites in Napa (Oakville, St Helena, Atlas Peak, Coombsville, Calistoga, and Howell Mountain.) The brand new 2021 edition is a beauty – deeply concentrated, rich and a truly show stopping Cabernet. It’s a dark, hedonistic blend that combines elegance with power and pairs the two together effortlessly.
90 Points, James Suckling
Damien has crafted a delicious Médoc, full of character with dense black currant and cherry fruit, cedar, tobacco and wonderful complexity. It’s silky complexion is what pushes it over the edge (and, of course, the price!) It doesn’t hurt that it comes from a 95-point Left Bank vintage that the Wine Advocate declared, “outstanding.”
