Then earlier this year, I got my hands on Piero Mancini’s Vermentino. I had forgotten how good white wines from Sardinia could be. That little wine was fantastic and fun and accompanied by a nice 90-point review. The feedback I got was that it hit the spot.
But today’s wine aint as much a “fun, little” wine as it is a serious and sophisticated bottling from arguably the island’s best producer. You see, while Sardinia is enjoying their moment in the sun — the wines of Argiolas have firmly been in the spotlight for the better part of the last decade, with this being the fourth straight vintage their flagship white has been rewarded with a 93-point score or higher. Here’s why:
There’s a very special thing that happens when Vermentino is grown in the proper place, somewhere with a near constant salt water sea breeze. It takes on a salty, minerality that helps it pair so beautifully with great cuisine. Nowhere is this more apparent than within the Gallura region in Sardinia.
But at Argiolas– quality has always been more important than quantity. So since the 1930’s while many of their neighbors have been pushing out literal truckloads white table wine, the Vermentino di Sardegna from Argiolas was the main attraction, not just an early season cash cow.
Decades of consistent quality has made them the premier winery on the Island, and many have copied their proven methods including picking their Vermentino late into the fall to maximize the fruit’s ripeness and balance it with the region’s natural acidity but no one can replicate the ancient vineyards. The resulting wines are full-bodied, intricate and long with a depth and a sophistication that few thought Vermentino would ever be able to produce.

93 Points (Editors’ Choice), Wine Enthusiast
You’ll find aromas of ripe yellow peach, citrus and honeydew in this delicious, full-bodied white. On the rounded, savory palate, tangy acidity lifts lime, Mediterranean herbs and lemon drop candy before an energized saline finish.

The newly released 2022 Domaine Laroche Chablis Saint Martin has some big shoes to fill as the last four vintages have earned 92-points or higher, but the early indications are that this is line with previous vintages if not even a little bit ahead at this stage. The problem is – there’s almost none to go around with much smaller yields. Still this is beautiful and crisp, with good focus, energy and depth. I get the signature green fruits on the nose, with some Asian pear, and a hint of jasmine blossom. There’s a beautiful mineral streak that highlights this one. It’s a fantastic White Burg for the price.
Elena Walch’s newly released 2022 Pinot Bianco continues to be the best example of Pinot Blanc anywhere. She’s the undisputed queen. There’s so much energy in this new release. Super light in color, with a busy nose that boasts ripe aromas of citrus, granny smith apple with a hint of freshly mowed grass. Made entirely in stainless steel, the wine is expressive, fresh and finishes as clean and tight as can be. Definitely will continue the run of 90+ scores once this one is reviewed.
The Zenato family has built up quite the reputation for delivering exceptional value with their red and whites in Veneto. Their Pinot Grigio is a particularly great value, punching way above its weight class. Delicately scented and soft on the palate, it offers classic citrus and floral notes in a balanced elegant style. It’s smooth and refreshing with a long, pleasant finish. Great with food.
Just in time, we got back Vincent Ricard’s all-time great white wine bargain. This is a crisp, clean and flat out delicious Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc. The protege to the Silex-style of Dagueneau – who over the last 15 years has produced flawless and beloved white wines that at last count were on the wine lists of over 36 Michelin-starred restaurants. This is a great house white and one that can surely hold its own with just about everything on the table.
