“It is remarkable, almost irrational, how the finest 2019s maintain detail, clarity and tension and sapid finishes…their acidic nerve underpins the success of 2019. These are vivid and bright wines, shiny as a new button…..the 2019 reds will be more approachable, yet they have the balance and substance to repay cellaring.”
That’s Neal Martin, Vinous Media’s Burgundy guy, on the delicious 2019s. I’m increasingly all in on the vintage — it’s one of those rare years where we get to enjoy the best of both worlds; delicious the moment you open a bottle with soaring aromatics, lush mouthfeel and fresh acidity yet with the bones for serious aging. Usually, it’s one or the other, but the magic of 2019 is that we get both.
Lydia Cornu’s 2019s are absolutely electric– exceptional bottles that I’ve tried to order as much as possible of just to be safe. This Cote de Nuits bottling is carved off a small vineyard called La Montagne with the vines planted by Lydia’s father nearly 45 years ago. It’s offers a fleshy and round mouthful full of crunchy black cherry notes, a bright acidity and a smooth and lingering finish. It’s a Red Burgundy steal for this price.

The 2021 Napa Valley East side Cuvee is an instant classic. From the first whiff to the moment it hits the lips, its clear that this is a fabulously concentrated, serious wine: black in color, and featuring aromas of cassis, cedar and chocolate-tinged purple fruit. The mouthfeel is plush and voluptuous with a firm, solid finish that speaks to its potential for considerable aging.
Not Eligible for Futher Discount-From famed winemaker, Robert Foley comes an absolute delight of a bottle of wine. A seamless Bordeaux blend of 80% Cabernet, 17% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot that is incredibly smoothly now but should have another decade easy of prime drinking. It is the definition of a Saturday Night bottle of wine. One to cherish for a special occasion.

“The 2021 Malbec Reserva, from Vistalba, Lujan de Cuyo, was 60% aged in barrels for 12 months. Purple in color. The nose presents notes of fresh plum and violets, white pepper, strawberry, hints of spice and aromas from the aging process. It’s initially indulgent in the mouth, with good fat, and volume and a velvety texture. The flavors are bold and full-bodied. This 2021 overdelivers at the price.” -Vinous

“The 2018 Palmer is a legend in the making…This audacious Palmer was still revving its engines 48 hours after opening. There will never be another Palmer like this, sui generis. It was a massive risk. But by throwing caution to the wind, something extraordinary was born.” -100 points, Vinous
