The Torres name carries great weight throughout the wine world – but especially in Spanish speaking countries. The family has been named Drink International’s ‘Most Admired European Brand’ for over a decade and they’ve been able to do that by finding value and possibilities in areas that others haven’t even thought to look.
In the early 1980’s, Miguel Torres opened one of the first Chilean wineries with his eyes firmly set on the export market. He was met with some doubt, but not for long as he quickly found out his wines had a chameleon effect when he was selling them. Time after time, he fooled importers and distributors who were positive they were tasting wines from France. His Chardonnay mirrors white Burgundy. His Carmenere and Cabernet can fool people into thinking they came from Bordeaux.
In his 30 years of Chilean winemaking, Miguel Torres has consistently outpaced those around them and built a reputation for excellence and innovation. It’s probably why the Chilean Wine Association named Miguel Torres’ winery the Winery of the Year in 2018 – that and wines like his 2018 Cordillera Cabernet, that completely shine on any stage.

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Cordillera de Los Andes comes from Maipo and spent 12 months aging in French barrels, 20% of them new. Garnet red in color. The nose is dominated by black currant and spice over sour cherry notes shaped by the time spent in the barrel. In the mouth, it’s something else entirely: accomplished freshness and juice are accompanied by fine-grained tannins and good volume, which comes packed full of flavor, followed by a long, bold, slightly compact finish in which the tannins linger pleasantly.

The classical Maipo 2018 Cordillera Cabernet Sauvignon is minty, herbal and spicy, a textbook example of the place, variety and vintage. It has a very intense palate with a medium body and fine-grained tannins that leave a stony sensation.
91 Points, James Suckling
Dark fruit with woody notes and dried-herb undertones. Medium-to full-bodied with chewy tannins. Fleshy and structured with rounded feel and good drinkability. Flavorful finish.

97 Points (Cellar Selection), Wine Enthusiast
“Quietly powerful, dense with alluring oak spices and late-picked fruit flavors, this full-bodied, velvet-textured Cabernet-dominant blend is generous and inviting to drink, but also balanced and structured for the long haul. Concentrated, deep and layered, it is meant for drinking with appreciative friends or family in the future. Best from 2027–2040.”

Domaine Jaume Vinsobres Altitude 420 is an old-vine Grenache-Syrah blend from vineyards planted in Les Collines at some of the highest points in the Rhône. The Jaumes have farmed these dizzying elevations at their estate in Vinsobres for 100+ years. The 2020 is one of his best yet, pristine and fresh, a bowl full of berried-up fruit yet with the tension and length that belies its humble price. Incredible bang for the buck, tailor-made for anyone’s house red, and a slam dunk for any kind of meat on the bone.

“Vignon’s 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape delivers even more than I hoped for based on a previous sample. Hints of garrigue, roses, cherries and raspberries appear on the nose, while the palate is full-bodied, silky and long, with an intense, almost briny finish. The assemblage is 50% Grenache, 10% each Mourvèdre and Syrah, plus smaller proportions of seven other permitted varieties, while the élevage includes foudres, demi-muids, concrete and wooden tanks, plus terracotta amphorae.”
