The winery is led by Rüdger van Wyk – one of the few black men who worked tirelessly to break through into the South African wine industry. van Wyk earned a job as an apprentice for Kanopop and one of South Africa’s greatest winemakers, Abrie Beeslaar. Beeslaar taught van Wyk his tireless approach with the three words he wanted him to focus on most, “excellence, excellence, excellence.”
A few years removed from that apprenticeship, van Wyk is one of those students that quickly became the master. He quickly earned a job working for Jose Conde at his family’s winery. That’s when things started really taking off. He won South Africa’s prestigious “Diners Club Young Winemaker of the Year” honor and has seen his Stark-Conde wines featured in Wine Enthusiast’s ‘Top 100 Wines of the Year’ list and gotten mid-90s from both Parker’s Wine Advocate and Wine Spectator… all before his 30th birthday.
It seems to just be the beginning for Rüdger van Wyk and Stark Conde. Last year, Wine Spectator put the 2017 Stark Conde Cabernet Sauvignon in their Top 100 wines of the year list, a first for the winery and the winemaker with the Wine Spectator. But that wine only had 91 points!
This year, with a much easier growing season and an ideal, bountiful harvest, the sky appears to be the limit. Only one critic has gotten to it so far, and yet the 2018 Cab Sauv already has a 94-point review from Decanter, Europe’s toughest wine critic.

“The 2020 Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is truly sensational. It begins with striking aromas of fresh blackberries, blueberries and dark plums that are laced with fresh spring florals, mocha, sweet exotic spices, graphite and gravel nuances all taking shape. The palate is full-bodied and displays a remarkable combination of power and elegance throughout. This is beautifully structured and extremely expressive, as it possesses outstanding depth and concentration all they way through the long, finessed finish. Year after year, the Columbia Valley Cabernet is one of the most impressive wines, and there is no exception here, as it combines all the wonderful qualities of the 2020 vintage from Quilceda Creek into one expression. This is fantastic already and readers will be in for a real treat, as this simply marvelous wine will continue to deliver the goods for years to come.”
93 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate – 93 Points, Jeb Dunnuck
“Vignon’s 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape delivers even more than I hoped for based on a previous sample. Hints of garrigue, roses, cherries and raspberries appear on the nose, while the palate is full-bodied, silky and long, with an intense, almost briny finish. The assemblage is 50% Grenache, 10% each Mourvèdre and Syrah, plus smaller proportions of seven other permitted varieties, while the élevage includes foudres, demi-muids, concrete and wooden tanks, plus terracotta amphorae.”
With seemingly infinite access to some of the absolute very best vineyards in the most choice AVAs in the valley, the Wagner’s set out to make Quilt– a Cabernet blend from a patchwork of the top sites in Napa (Oakville, St Helena, Atlas Peak, Coombsville, Calistoga, and Howell Mountain.) The brand new 2021 edition is a beauty – deeply concentrated, rich and a truly show stopping Cabernet. It’s a dark, hedonistic blend that combines elegance with power and pairs the two together effortlessly.

Damien has crafted a delicious Médoc, full of character with dense black currant and cherry fruit, cedar, tobacco and wonderful complexity. It’s silky complexion is what pushes it over the edge (and, of course, the price!) It doesn’t hurt that it comes from a 95-point Left Bank vintage that the Wine Advocate declared, “outstanding.”
