Tim Hamilton Russell founded his undeveloped 170 hectare property in 1975, after an exhaustive search for the most southerly site on which to make South Africa’s top cool climate wines. Eventually, his son would take over in the early 90s and focus exclusively on Burgundian varietals for the estate, but would also develop ‘Ashbourne’ to the North of HR to focus on South Africa’s native Pinotage and Southern Right to the south to focus on Sauvignon Blanc.
These wines are made on a gorgeous 448 hectare property in the cool, maritime, Hemel-en-Aarde Valley appellation, just behind the old fishing village of Hermanus. The wines are named after the rare Southern Right whales, which frequent the cool South Atlantic Walker Bay, only a mile or two from the vineyards.
Together, this collection of wine represents some of the very best the country has to offer. I mean the accolades are truly second to none. World famous Master Somm, John Szabo declared, “Hamilton Russell is the original and still the gold standard for the region. The wines are all class.” Wine Spectator echoed that sentiment arguing, “Today the winery (Hamilton Russell Vineyards) is one of the most recognized brands in the U.S. market, and rightfully so.” They’ve also named their wines in their annual Top 100 more than a half dozen times.
Heck, these wines are so good, that Southern Right became one of the only under $20 wines to grace the Wine Spectator Top 100 list when they announced their 2020 wines of the year. It speaks to their unrivaled quality to price ratio.

90 Points, Neil Martin – Vinous
“The 2022 Sauvignon Blanc comes from 27 sites and sees 10% matured in 7th fill neutral oak barrels after months on the less. Attractive on the nose with Golden Delicious, pine and light resinous notes. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, quite taut and lightly spiced; just a faint hint of ginger appears towards the finish. Enjoy this over the next seven to eight years.”
90 Points, James Suckling
Aromas of green apples, lemons, lime zest and herbs. Medium-bodied with zippy acidity, citrusy undertones and a fleshy finish. Sustainable. Drink now.

It’s an electric white Burgundy, with a limestone-laced aromatic profile of green apple, pear and hazelnut. Refined and high-toned, the pure, delicious fruit that is a hallmark of this terrific vintage, finishes long and fresh, with a mile-long mineral streak.
Just in time, we got back Vincent Ricard’s all-time great white wine bargain. This is a crisp, clean and flat out delicious Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc. The protege to the Silex-style of Dagueneau – who over the last 15 years has produced flawless and beloved white wines that at last count were on the wine lists of over 36 Michelin-starred restaurants. This is a great house white and one that can surely hold its own with just about everything on the table.
Glistening pale yellow-green to the rim, infused with mouth-watering aromas of ripe apple, pear and quince, and crushed almonds with honey and rich creamy middle and a fantastic rush of acidity and minerality that are present throughout. A calling card of Bonhomme’s Vire-Clesse, if you closed your eyes and took a sip, it would have you convinced you were drinking Meursault at least a 3x price tag.
The newly released 2022 Domaine Laroche Chablis Saint Martin has some big shoes to fill as the last four vintages have earned 92-points or higher, but the early indications are that this is line with previous vintages if not even a little bit ahead at this stage. The problem is – there’s almost none to go around with much smaller yields. Still this is beautiful and crisp, with good focus, energy and depth. I get the signature green fruits on the nose, with some Asian pear, and a hint of jasmine blossom. There’s a beautiful mineral streak that highlights this one. It’s a fantastic White Burg for the price.
