If you haven’t been paying attention lately – Spain is undergoing a wine renaissance of sorts – making some of the most compelling and interesting old-vine Reds anywhere in the world. Deeply profound wines that go far beyond the Rioja tag that is so commonly associated with wines from this great winegrowing region.
The most exciting thing for Spanish wine lovers is that the charge is being led by homegrown talent and not foreign investments – winemakers like Sandra Bravo at Sierra de Tolono who grew up in the vineyards of Rioja, before venturing out to Bordeaux, Tuscany, New Zealand and California before returning to her old stomping grounds and opening one of the top wine projects in the country.
Utilizing some of the oldest and highest altitude vineyards in Rioja in the foothills of the Sierra de Tolono, Bravo’s high-toned, pure and expressive Reds are an absolute treat. They’re a must try for those who like serious reds, and there’s plenty of reasons for it.
Farming biodynamically, Bravo has been producing some of the most delicious, vibrant and terroir driven wines since she first started in 2012. She is relentless in her pursuit of freshness and purity and the few wines that I’ve had from her she has achieved all of that and then some.

96 Points, Tim Atkin, MW
“This is the fourth vintage of Sandra Bravo’s brilliant old-vine Garnacha from Rivas de Tereso and it’s every bit as good as its predecessors. Aged in 300-litre clay amphoras, it’s wonderfully perfumed and intense, with engaging bramble and red cherry fruit sweetness, fine tannins and a long, energetic palate. Drink 2023-2032”

This is Joe Wagner and Quilt’s inaugural Red blend called Threadcount. It is a total knockout at the price point for this style of wine. It’s a big voluptuous wine and very fruit forward. The nose is straight up dark chocolate dipped raspberries and it tastes of fresh-baked blueberry pie, spice, and a touch of toffee. It’s the kind of quality blend that you’ve come to expect from the family behind Caymus.

The new release is here from outstanding winemaking team of Michel Rolland, Charles Thomas, Andy Erickson and David Jelenik. This one always represents one of the best quality-to-price ratios in all of Napa Cab and in the stellar 2021 vintage, this really stands out as one of the best the Valley has to offer. It’s a racy mix of Coombsville fruit from Atlas Peak that absolutely roars out of the bottle. Always one of Napa’s great bargains and a must have even as the price starts to sneak up here a little bit.
Winemaker Pascal Sirat consistently puts out some of the best value Bordeaux in the region but he may have outdone himself in what was a stellar 2019 vintage throughout the region. Just south of Pomerol, the vines at Panchille borrow deep in the soil. The resulting wines are ripe but fresh, with an aromatic complexity and stony finish usually reserved for wine twice the price. Daniel Boulud tells me it’s been the hottest bottle of wine at Bar Boulud for over a month, so I figured I’d better hurry up and secure my allocation! Don’t miss it.
90 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
Xavier Vignon’s brand spanking new CDR 100% is a thing of beauty. It’s already got a blessing from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate who described this wine as, “Full-bodied, concentrated and supple”. This is a gorgeous and intricate blend that features all of the Southern Rhone appellations. This year, the blend was 40% Grenache, 25% Mourvedre, 15% Syrah, 7% Cinsault, 7% Marselan, 6% Terret Noir. Nobody can do it like the mad scientist, Xavier Vignon.
