With Thanksgiving in mind, we should discuss what works best with the Big Bird. For me, the unique mix of flavors of the traditional Thanksgiving Dinner needs wine that is fresh and vibrant. Aromatic, high toned wines work best, you need plenty of cut to get through all that richness. An absolutely brilliant one just rolled off its temp-controlled container, an electric Italian white wine that is going to be just perfect with the All-American meal.
It’s all in the family at Morgassi Superiore, where sisters, Marina and Cecilia Piacitelli joined their Dad in 1993 at the estate, a farm in Gavi di Gavi, in northwestern Italy. The vineyards are 300 meters in altitude, the highest in area and planted on limestone-laden slopes. The Piacitellis farm without the use of chemicals and do everything by hand, ensuring that their Gavi is wildly aromatic, loaded with fruit and finishes crisp and a mile long.
It’s a great choice for holiday white, versatile, wonderful as an aperitif or delicious with any kind of holiday fare. Better than just about Pinot Grigio we’ve tasted this year, it’s an easy choice for the perfect Thanksgiving white.

The Zenato family has built up quite the reputation for delivering exceptional value with their red and whites in Veneto. Their Pinot Grigio is a particularly great value, punching way above its weight class. Delicately scented and soft on the palate, it offers classic citrus and floral notes in a balanced elegant style. It’s smooth and refreshing with a long, pleasant finish. Great with food.
It’s an electric white Burgundy, with a limestone-laced aromatic profile of green apple, pear and hazelnut. Refined and high-toned, the pure, delicious fruit that is a hallmark of this terrific vintage, finishes long and fresh, with a mile-long mineral streak.
For years now, I’ve been absolutely delighted by the White Burgundies at Domaine Corsin. There’s really good reason for that. The Corsin’s holdings in Pouilly-Fuissé include many of the best situated sites in the appellation. This wine comes from a selection of older vines grown in these limestone soils. The current vintage is simply showing fantastic at the moment. The 2020 Corsin Domain’s Pouilly-Fuissé ‘Vieilles Vignes’ displays a bright golden hue with a hint of green. Its subtle bouquet with a woody-vanilla note enhances the slightly sharp, sophisticated fullness on the palate mingled with a generous underlying impression of toasted bread.
Just in time, we got back Vincent Ricard’s all-time great white wine bargain. This is a crisp, clean and flat out delicious Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc. The protege to the Silex-style of Dagueneau – who over the last 15 years has produced flawless and beloved white wines that at last count were on the wine lists of over 36 Michelin-starred restaurants. This is a great house white and one that can surely hold its own with just about everything on the table.
