After 150 years & compiling Spain’s most impressive portfolio of real estate in the country – you’d think the Torres Family might rest on their laurels – but they’ve been on an ambitious tear of late. We’ve been happy to play a small part in the past year – offering their 95-point gold medal winning Albarino as well as their sensational 92-point, $15 Rioja. But, today’s offer is something new all together.
This one, from Drink International’s “Most Admired Brand in Europe” comes courtesy of South America, where the Torres Family forever changed the wine industry in Chile more than 40 years ago. For those keeping score, that’s a full decade ahead of the Rothschilds of Lafite with their Las Vascos investment.
When the family announced their intentions to build a wine program unlike any that had ever been built before in the history of Chile, few would have even been able to comprehend what they were dreaming up.
The winery was built, tucked away in the oasis that is Chile’s Central Valley on the West Coast between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes Mountains. All of their wines are certified organic and vegan, but their dedication to the land and proper viticultural methods goes even further than virtually anybody else. The property has an array of free roaming animals that assist in the fertilization of the soil. Ducks, rodents, rabbits, horses and mules, and some larger predators that like to make the occasional visit.
The winery also keeps up with the rare Torres Family tradition of fair trade practices, becoming the first in the Southern hemisphere to do so. They were also the first to introduce stainless steel wine aging in the region as well as the introduction of French Oak, two fermentation techniques that forever changed Chilean wine.

Every year, Pierre Sparr’s Alsacian Riesling is one of the top scoring wines in the under $20 category. There’s a consistency there and consumers know they can count on a Riesling that is aromatic, fruity, elegant, clean and vibrant. Pierre Sparr wines are extremely food-friendly especially in the widely praised 2021 vintage where quality rose to an all-time high. It’s a bone-dry beauty with layers of citrus fruits, framed by wet stone and mineral character that adds dimension.
The Zenato family has built up quite the reputation for delivering exceptional value with their red and whites in Veneto. Their Pinot Grigio is a particularly great value, punching way above its weight class. Delicately scented and soft on the palate, it offers classic citrus and floral notes in a balanced elegant style. It’s smooth and refreshing with a long, pleasant finish. Great with food.
Elena Walch’s newly released 2022 Pinot Bianco continues to be the best example of Pinot Blanc anywhere. She’s the undisputed queen. There’s so much energy in this new release. Super light in color, with a busy nose that boasts ripe aromas of citrus, granny smith apple with a hint of freshly mowed grass. Made entirely in stainless steel, the wine is expressive, fresh and finishes as clean and tight as can be. Definitely will continue the run of 90+ scores once this one is reviewed.
It’s hard to beat a great value white wine and this one is a at least a cut above the rest. One prominant industry insider called the 2022 edition, “the best white wine by any within $20/cs of this price.” It’s super crisp with a great mineral streak, and was carefully picked by hand when the temperature is coolest and is kept cool all the way into the press. From there, the effect of the mineral soil takes over, providing great finesse and freshness in every bottle. This white blend has great backbone and a lot of juicy fruit coming through behind aromas of flowers and stone fruits. At this price, it’s a no brainer.
