Massolino is a treasure. They’re one of the few wineries that can say they have almost 30(!) wines on Wine Spectator’s annual ‘Top 100 Wines of the Year’ list, including last year’s vintage, the 2016 which I offered a few weeks before its #7 placement. As you could imagine, that made getting an allocation this year infinitely more difficult, but I was able to do so if I took it right away before Wine Spectator scores it.
Massolino is armed with three fabulous Cru vineyards, Margheria, Parafada, and Vigna Rionda – the former is considered by most to be the crown jewel vineyard of Serralunga. Together, the three vineyards producer some of the best wines in the world.
It seems like no matter the vintage, the winemaking team puts out beautiful Barolos but in 2018 the case has never been stronger for their Serralunga Barolo – as this one is a little bit different than in other years. An uneasy growing easy gave the winemaking team enough doubt to decide to take the best eight barrels that were earmarked for the Grand Cru bottlings and ultimately decided to blend them back into the DOCG Barolo, adding even more depth of flavor, power and complexity than in regular years.

96 Points (Editors’ Choice), Wine Enthusiast
In 2018 the estate didn’t make its cru-specific bottlings so the best grapes are in this straight Barolo. And it shows. It opens with heady scents of eucalyptus, pine forest, hay, new leather and lilac. Extremely elegant, the savory, vibrant palate exhibits red cherry, juniper berry and star anise set against taut, refined tannins and bright acidity.
93 Points, Wine Spectator
This red packs loads of floral, strawberry, cherry and white pepper aromas and flavors. Slim and fruity for the most part yet with a solid underlying structure. Austere for now on the finish, but well balanced overall. Best from 2025 through 2043.

Anne Sery describes her Trousse Chemise Cabernets as an ode to the Left Bank and her winemaking roots. It’s a beautiful and fresh Cabernet with aromas that leap from the glass with of black raspberry, violets, and creme de liquor notes. The mouth gives generous amounts of juicy black fruits at the core with hints of baking spice and a smooth, savory finish. This is a terrific partner for just about anything from hard cheese, to poultry, summer salads, you name it!
90-92 Pts, Parker’s Wine Advocate – 91 Pts (Editors’ Choice), Wine Enthusiast – 91 Pts, Decanter
The wines get consistent high praise but 2018 is truly something special. 90-92 from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. 91 points and an Editor’s Choice designation from Wine Enthusiast. 91 more from Decanter who provides “There is so much to enjoy in the smaller appellations this year. Drinking Window 2022 – 2031” and another 90 point score from James Suckling. This is a home run value – especially for the price.
The newly released Fiancetto Howell Mt. Cabernet is a dream – a gorgeous, elegant dark-fruited Cabernet Sauvignon that is it picks up time in the glass, unfurls its full signature of cedar laced cassis nose and mid palate of chocolate-covered cherries and savory spices. Only four palates of this (224 cases) were made off a gorgeous, sprawling high elevation spot 1500 feet above sea level. It’s full and plush and finishes fresh and oh so long. The price is crazy for Howell Mountain Cabernet but that’s what Ry Richards and Fiancetto is all about.
95 Points, James Suckling – 94 Points, Wine Spectator – 93 Points, Wine Enthusiast
The new release is here from outstanding winemaking team of Michel Rolland, Charles Thomas, Andy Erickson and David Jelenik. This one always represents one of the best quality-to-price ratios in all of Napa Cab and in the stellar 2021 vintage, this really stands out as one of the best the Valley has to offer. It’s a racy mix of Coombsville fruit from Atlas Peak that absolutely roars out of the bottle. Always one of Napa’s great bargains and a must have even as the price starts to sneak up here a little bit.
