It’s actually a very time consuming process that takes a lot of concentration & a very good palate. I would suggest never buying a “Personal” barrel of Makers unless your really trust the person that’s blending that particular barrel. Some of my first blends in this process were just straight nasty.
But once I understood what each oak stave brought to the final blend I was able to zero in on what was IMHO the best Maker’s I ever tasted. I think I was blending and tasting for 3 hours and tried nearly 30 different blends.
That barrel sold out in 1 week. Makers asked me if I wanted to blend a 2nd barrel. I said “no chance, that was as good as I could do, make the 2nd the exact same as the first.” This is unique to Maker’s because if we blend the exact same way we can duplicate the barrel the same way a distillery gets a house style for their regular blend. As many of you experienced, that 2nd barrel tasted just like the 1st. We have been sold out of Makers NBR for 6 months. As you might guess, my 3rd barrel tastes just like barrels 1 & 2.

“At the helm for Blue Run Spirits’ whiskeys are whiskey director Shaylyn Gammon and liquid advisor Jim Rutledge, who demonstrate their mastery with this blend of three Kentucky bourbons aged 6, 8, and 9 years. Oatmeal raisin cookies and tropical aromas dominate the nose, though dried pineapple is soon overtaken by cinnamon spice, vanilla bean, and grape jelly. The palate is rich with flavors of chocolate and espresso, then playful notes of raspberry syrup. Flourless chocolate cake, more fruit, and a good deal of heat make for a tantalizing finish.”
True whiskey and Knob Creek enthusiasts are going to go nuts for this one. Knob Creek Rye is as outstanding as it is rare but today we’re lucky enough to bring to you, my own single barrel of it. This is a big gold expression of Rye that holds nothing back. On the nose, there are hints of dill, rye and essence of charred oak. On the palate, you are hit over the head with baking spice, honey and freshly baked bread. The finish is certainly a warm “Kentucky Hug” that goes on forever.
This is definitely one of the most unique private barrels of bourbon you’re gonna find anywhere and it comes from our friends at in Kirby at Wyoming Whiskey. It’s been two years since we’ve had this baby! They make their own whiskey in-house instead of getting it shipped to them and finishing it. In doing so, they use winter wheat to churn out a medium length whiskey with notes of honey, burnt sugar, cinnamon and caramel on the finish. It’s sensational – but I only have 120 bottles from this barrel to offer up.
