Jonive is the baby of the Underwood family is writing the next chapter in their long history in the wine business. The Underwoods are the owners of Young’s Holdings, one of America’s oldest continuously operated family-owned businesses made famous by Young’s Market.
Over the decades, they’ve continuously expanded their holdings into grocery, soda bottling, meat, seafood wholesale and eventually alcohol beverage wholesale. The founding of Jonive from the 5th generation of the Young’s Family marks an exciting evolution for the family, in establishing estate-grown wines of exceptional quality.
Jonive’s Moon Dust Vineyard is nested within the Sebastopol Hills in the coolest area of the Russian River Valley, home to rare and desirable Goldridge soils. This gives the winery an advantage, especially in a region where extreme temperatures are coveted.
It was first planted to vines in 1998, the vineyard consists of four pristine acres of Chardonnay, comprising two individual clones across two blocks. In 2007, the vineyard was expanded to comprise an additional 11 acres of Pinot Noir, planted to 6 distinct Pinot Noir clones. Jonive is a great reflection of vine maturity, organic farming, high-quality soil, and a world-class microclimate.

“The Jonvive wines come from their Moon Dust Estate Vineyard in the Sebastopol Hills, a cool site even by Russian River Valley standards. Lushly aromatic with notes of chicory, sumac and loads of wild berries. The palate is fresh but well-structured. Red rasperberries, fresh mint, and savory smoke follow the flavors of cloves. Delcious, but youthful with the structure to continue to develop over the next 8 to 10 years.”

This is a really exciting new release in the collection of single-vineyards from the Wagner Family, and arguably the most interesting one of the bunch. This is the only Pinot Noir in the Caymus collection that has the advantage of being from a natural Pinot Noir haven in the Russian River Valley. Dairyman Vineyard’s proximity to the pacific ocean, with its morning fog and afternoon coastal breezes allows for an even and elongated growing season, with super concentrated and expressive grape clusters that help make this Dijon clone Pinot Noir one that you need.

“The 2020 Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is truly sensational. It begins with striking aromas of fresh blackberries, blueberries and dark plums that are laced with fresh spring florals, mocha, sweet exotic spices, graphite and gravel nuances all taking shape. The palate is full-bodied and displays a remarkable combination of power and elegance throughout. This is beautifully structured and extremely expressive, as it possesses outstanding depth and concentration all they way through the long, finessed finish. Year after year, the Columbia Valley Cabernet is one of the most impressive wines, and there is no exception here, as it combines all the wonderful qualities of the 2020 vintage from Quilceda Creek into one expression. This is fantastic already and readers will be in for a real treat, as this simply marvelous wine will continue to deliver the goods for years to come.”
Anne Sery describes her Trousse Chemise Cabernets as an ode to the Left Bank and her winemaking roots. It’s a beautiful and fresh Cabernet with aromas that leap from the glass with of black raspberry, violets, and creme de liquor notes. The mouth gives generous amounts of juicy black fruits at the core with hints of baking spice and a smooth, savory finish. This is a terrific partner for just about anything from hard cheese, to poultry, summer salads, you name it!
It’s no surprise the Wine Advocate has called the Ventoux a “screaming bargain.” Carved off the left bank of the Rhone River, the 2020 Delas Ventoux is a gorgeous medium-bodied wine with wonderful crushed red fruits, a silky mouthfeel, tremendous structure and that signature Rhone spice on the finish. I haven’t had this wine available for a few vintages, but I figure it’s the perfect springtime Red to bring back in the fold!
