Napa Valley experienced two stunning back-to-back vintages in 2018 and 2019 the likes of which I have never seen…Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media
The good news about Napa Valley 2019 Cabernets is that they are stunning wines. Products of near perfect growing conditions, Galloni goes on to say, the 2019s I have tasted so far are fabulous. The wines feel like they have a little more energy, power and depth than the 2018s. Winemakers like Ry Richards were able to take advantage of the high quality/high yields of 2019, locking into two parcels to make what I believe will be a legendary vintage of his Fiancetto Gravelly Loam Cabernet.
The just arrived 2019 is flashy, polished Cabernet with a core of dark cassis fruit with just the right touch of new oak. Long on the palate and slow to unwind in the glass, the Fiancetto 2019 is absolutely packed. Give it time in a big glass to fully reveal all its got. The only shadow on the horizon of Napa Cabernet as we start rolling out the 2019s is that there is very little wine in 2020. In the 2019 vintage report from Robert’s Parker’s Wine Advocate, they rave about the wines, calling them classic, ripe, plush and beautifully expressive style…but end with a warning, Take advantage of 2019, while it lasts…..

With seemingly infinite access to some of the absolute very best vineyards in the most choice AVAs in the valley, the Wagner’s set out to make Quilt– a Cabernet blend from a patchwork of the top sites in Napa (Oakville, St Helena, Atlas Peak, Coombsville, Calistoga, and Howell Mountain.) The brand new 2021 edition is a beauty – deeply concentrated, rich and a truly show stopping Cabernet. It’s a dark, hedonistic blend that combines elegance with power and pairs the two together effortlessly.

The new release is here from outstanding winemaking team of Michel Rolland, Charles Thomas, Andy Erickson and David Jelenik. This one always represents one of the best quality-to-price ratios in all of Napa Cab and in the stellar 2021 vintage, this really stands out as one of the best the Valley has to offer. It’s a racy mix of Coombsville fruit from Atlas Peak that absolutely roars out of the bottle. Always one of Napa’s great bargains and a must have even as the price starts to sneak up here a little bit.

“The 2018 Palmer is a legend in the making…This audacious Palmer was still revving its engines 48 hours after opening. There will never be another Palmer like this, sui generis. It was a massive risk. But by throwing caution to the wind, something extraordinary was born.” -100 points, Vinous

The oft 100-point winemaker, Jayson Woodbridge had this to say when tasting his 2021 ‘Stargazing’ Sonoma Pinot: “The wine is vibrant and complex with subtle dark fruits and berries, grandmother’s cherry pie, minerals, and a slight touch of rain-soaked earth, intertwined with a balance and very pleasing easy-going luxury. Should have been priced higher but what the hell.” I have no doubt this clerical error will be addressed in the vintages moving forward. But for now, this is a cult Pinot for under $100/bottle.
