Three decades after starting Caymus, Charlie and Chuck would be inducted into Wine Spectator’s ‘Wine Hall of Fame’, earning countless ‘Wine’ and ‘Winery of the Year’ awards from multiple publications along the way. The 100% family-owned operation has flourished into one of America’s most iconic brands, and in true Wagner family tradition, was turned over to the next generation, with Chuck handing over some of the reigns to two of his children, Charlie and Jenny.
Making some of the biggest, boldest wines you can find anywhere, you have to wait in a Black Friday-sized line to get your hands on a bottle of their flagship ‘Special Selection’ Cabernet, even when you’re a restaurant owner. Their wine flies off the shelves and has done so long before Forbes Magazine called it “A Wine-Lover’s Favorite Wine”.
But decades long relationships have a way of creating great opportunities, and today is a perfect example of a dinosaur bone being thrown my way. I got a call from an old buddy the Friday after Thanksgiving asking if I had any interest in some Wagner Family wines. I said yes without even asking what it would cost me. Then I was told the price. Now I’m saying ‘Oh, hell yes!”. As always, those savings will be passed down to you, our Nicholas faithful. So here it goes…
2017 Emmolo Napa Valley Merlot
We heard your call for more barbecue friendly wines and today we’re bringing you one of the best in the US of A. Jenny Wagner, the youngest daughter of Chuck Wagner has watched her dad carefully balance high-alcohol wines that you never seem to taste on the palate. She took over the reins in 2011 and absolutely ran with it, making Emmolo a name of its own. In the 2017 vintage, she delivered a wonderful ode to the Right Bank– crafting a a big, lush dark-fruited Merlot off two of the family’s Oak Knoll vineyards. Smooth, well-balanced tannins drive this wine with intricate flavors of black cherries, blueberries, mocha and and violet.

Great with a nice piece of steak, swine or poultry.
At J Vineyards, Nicole is nothing short of a magician, making 30 different skus or more each vintage between her Pinots, Chardonnays, and Sparkling wines. For the vineyard’s flagship Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, up to 100 individual small lots are combined to make this great wine. Somehow, the blend is effortless–a quintessential RRV Pinot that has those soaring aromatics, bright red fruits, clove, and nutmeg spice with perfect balance.
94 Points, Tasting Panel
This is a really exciting new release in the collection of single-vineyards from the Wagner Family, and arguably the most interesting one of the bunch. This is the only Pinot Noir in the Caymus collection that has the advantage of being from a natural Pinot Noir haven in the Russian River Valley. Dairyman Vineyard’s proximity to the pacific ocean, with its morning fog and afternoon coastal breezes allows for an even and elongated growing season, with super concentrated and expressive grape clusters that help make this Dijon clone Pinot Noir one that you need.
91 Points, Wine Enthusiast
Always the one with the most personality of the bunch, this is what Wine Enthusiast had to say about the 2021 release: “This extremely ripe and bold style of Pinot Noir will please those seeking such lushness. Dark in the glass, it begins with black cherry, toasty caramel and cola milk shake aromas.” The cool, coastal days and abundance of sunshine lines up perfectly for a wine that has a good natural acidic backbone, with bold fruit-forward flavors. In an easy 2021 vintage, Joe Wagner had a field day with this single-vineyard beauty.
90 Points, James Suckling
Damien has crafted a delicious Médoc, full of character with dense black currant and cherry fruit, cedar, tobacco and wonderful complexity. It’s silky complexion is what pushes it over the edge (and, of course, the price!) It doesn’t hurt that it comes from a 95-point Left Bank vintage that the Wine Advocate declared, “outstanding.”
