Double Canyon continues to prove themselves amongst the best producers in Washington State with each new vintage produced. The focus at the winery has been crafting exceptional Washington Cabernet Sauvignon from pedigreed vineyard sites, anchored by their namesake Double Canyon Vineyard in Horse Heaven Hills.
For five consecutive vintages, they’ve seen their Horse Heaven Hills Cabernet highly scored, and I know for sure the 2019 will continue the trend (it already has a 90-pt score in its infancy).
We’re one of the first people in the country to have the new release. I’m happy to report that once again this one checks all the boxes of a great Double Canyon Cab. It’s got pristine red and black fruits. On the attack, the wine offers intricately woven youthful tannins that give the wine a delicious and slightly chewy taste. It’s a crowd pleaser – and at this price it continues to show why it’s one of Nicholas Wines’ all-time customer favorites.

This producer always delivers varietal and appellation revealing Cabernet. This wine displays notes of clove, vanilla, dark chocolate, cherry and spice. The palate is fresh, giving a light grip of tannins. Decant to see it at its best.

The newly released Fiancetto Howell Mt. Cabernet is a dream – a gorgeous, elegant dark-fruited Cabernet Sauvignon that is it picks up time in the glass, unfurls its full signature of cedar laced cassis nose and mid palate of chocolate-covered cherries and savory spices. Only four palates of this (224 cases) were made off a gorgeous, sprawling high elevation spot 1500 feet above sea level. It’s full and plush and finishes fresh and oh so long. The price is crazy for Howell Mountain Cabernet but that’s what Ry Richards and Fiancetto is all about.

“The 2018 Palmer is a legend in the making…This audacious Palmer was still revving its engines 48 hours after opening. There will never be another Palmer like this, sui generis. It was a massive risk. But by throwing caution to the wind, something extraordinary was born.” -100 points, Vinous

Damien has crafted a delicious Médoc, full of character with dense black currant and cherry fruit, cedar, tobacco and wonderful complexity. It’s silky complexion is what pushes it over the edge (and, of course, the price!) It doesn’t hurt that it comes from a 95-point Left Bank vintage that the Wine Advocate declared, “outstanding.”
Winemaker Kian Tavakoli (Opus One, Clos du Val) continues to excel even while others struggle. In 2017, he still managed to deliver a beautiful and opulent Napa Valley Cabernet that’s both dark and juicy. The wine hails from both Coombsville and Rutherford, giving it distinct characteristics and a lot of drive. Deep ruby to the rim with excellent concentration, notes of Bing cherries, raspberry pie and hints of vanilla. On the palate, big wonderfully jammy fruit with young but impressive tannins and great length. The finish leaves notes of black cherry, and baked blueberry pie. Fantastic Napa value.
