If you’re not familiar with the Coulon family and the Beaurenard name, they’re one of the longest tenured winemakers in the Southern Rhone and they helped to establish the Chateauneuf-du-Pape AOC.
Now in the hands of brothers brothers Frederic and Daniel Coulon, Domaine de Beaurenard has never been in such good hands. The winery has been a consistent critical darling over many, many years in the business – long before they graced the Thanksgiving cover of Wine Spectator in 2018.
In that same Wine Spectator issue – three of the top ten white Chateauneufs of the year went to Beaurenard. It’s a little taste of what these guys do.
But the Reds set the tone, especially in the past decade and with good reason. They’re always lights out. The big question this year will be if the signature Beaurenard CDP Cuvee can get scored at 94 points or higher for a 6th(!) consecutive vintage dating back to 2015. That type of barrage of high scores in a country where the weather has been variable speaks to a consistent excellence that few can claim.

The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape is terrific, offering classic darker berry fruits as well as peppery garrigue and sappy flower notes. As with the Boisrenard release, this has plenty of tannins and structure, but it’s beautifully balanced and has remarkable purity as well as a great finish.

Winemaker Pascal Sirat consistently puts out some of the best value Bordeaux in the region but he may have outdone himself in what was a stellar 2019 vintage throughout the region. Just south of Pomerol, the vines at Panchille borrow deep in the soil. The resulting wines are ripe but fresh, with an aromatic complexity and stony finish usually reserved for wine twice the price. Daniel Boulud tells me it’s been the hottest bottle of wine at Bar Boulud for over a month, so I figured I’d better hurry up and secure my allocation! Don’t miss it.

“Vignon’s 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape delivers even more than I hoped for based on a previous sample. Hints of garrigue, roses, cherries and raspberries appear on the nose, while the palate is full-bodied, silky and long, with an intense, almost briny finish. The assemblage is 50% Grenache, 10% each Mourvèdre and Syrah, plus smaller proportions of seven other permitted varieties, while the élevage includes foudres, demi-muids, concrete and wooden tanks, plus terracotta amphorae.”
It’s always nice to be in good standing with one of the most beloved wine brands in America! These won’t last long! This is an opulent, powerful dark-fruited Cabernet with tightly woven tannins, that is just raring and ready to go. Textbook, full-bodied, revved up and ready to go, this new Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet is the definition of a crowd pleaser.
With seemingly infinite access to some of the absolute very best vineyards in the most choice AVAs in the valley, the Wagner’s set out to make Quilt– a Cabernet blend from a patchwork of the top sites in Napa (Oakville, St Helena, Atlas Peak, Coombsville, Calistoga, and Howell Mountain.) The brand new 2021 edition is a beauty – deeply concentrated, rich and a truly show stopping Cabernet. It’s a dark, hedonistic blend that combines elegance with power and pairs the two together effortlessly.
