Andre Bonhomme’s white Burgundies always impress but the 2019 Vire Clessé is on a whole new level. Part of it is the vintage, I’m sure. As Jancis Robinson pointed out during her recent trip to Burgundy to taste all the top Meursault and the surrounding areas:
“I lost count of the delicious 2019s carrying the lowly Bourgogne appellation that I tasted, and these seemed so much better value than the grands crus that demand three- or even four-figure sums per bottle and many a long year of ageing.”
The weather took care of some of the hard work – with draught-conditions forcing universally smaller grapes, thereby concentrating flavors. But unlike 2020, where some vines were under stress, the 2019s just seemed to plow ahead through the heat, making wines of immense character and striking acids.
The result is a pretty special and rare gift. The 2019s will be one of the great vintages, but few wines if any will go through an ugly period – requiring extended aging. These wines are delicious and ready to drink right away and for the next several years.

The newly released Riesling Feinherb 2021 is a lively, juicy wine with an elegant bouquet of minerals, wet stone and ripe fruit. On the palate, the wine’s slight off-dry component is beautifully balanced by the steely acidity typical of the Mosel. Because this is freshly released, the fruit is vibrant and succulent and it comes in somewhere between off-dry and semi-sweet. It’s a great example of Riesling, especially at the price.
Glistening pale yellow-green to the rim, infused with mouth-watering aromas of ripe apple, pear and quince, and crushed almonds with honey and rich creamy middle and a fantastic rush of acidity and minerality that are present throughout. A calling card of Bonhomme’s Vire-Clesse, if you closed your eyes and took a sip, it would have you convinced you were drinking Meursault at least a 3x price tag.
From just west of Sancerre, Vincent’s vines are tended organically in flint-laden, calcareous soil which lends a great brightness to the wine. The wine is crisp and aromatic Sauvignon, and is a superb choice for a “cocktail” wine, as an aperitif or to accompany just about anything from sea.
Just in time, we got back Vincent Ricard’s all-time great white wine bargain. This is a crisp, clean and flat out delicious Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc. The protege to the Silex-style of Dagueneau – who over the last 15 years has produced flawless and beloved white wines that at last count were on the wine lists of over 36 Michelin-starred restaurants. This is a great house white and one that can surely hold its own with just about everything on the table.
