Dennis Carré was not born into a wine family but knew from the time he was a teenager that he wanted to be a winemaker. In 1975, he took his savings and rented a parcel of vines, later producing three barrels of Passetoutgrain. While financing his dreams working in a garage at night, his days were spent in the vines and small winery he began constructing in the late seventies in Meloisey in the Hautes Côtes de Beaune. Nearly forty years later, the old family house is now surrounded by a modern winery and underground aging cellars. Their 13 hectares of vines are spread over 8 appellations from which they produce 12 wines.
Arguably the best bang for the buck in the whole arsenal is the Sous La Velle. absolutely phenomenal white Burgundy from Dennis Carré and his team. The Sous la Valle comes from the family vineyards located in the village of Meursault, but just outside the limits of the AOC. That’s good for us considering what’s in the bottle. A sophisticated White Burg made from 35 year old vines on marl and limestone, the perfect stage for deep, chiseled Chardonnay. This should be three times the price.

Elena Walch’s newly released 2022 Pinot Bianco continues to be the best example of Pinot Blanc anywhere. She’s the undisputed queen. There’s so much energy in this new release. Super light in color, with a busy nose that boasts ripe aromas of citrus, granny smith apple with a hint of freshly mowed grass. Made entirely in stainless steel, the wine is expressive, fresh and finishes as clean and tight as can be. Definitely will continue the run of 90+ scores once this one is reviewed.
The Zenato family has built up quite the reputation for delivering exceptional value with their red and whites in Veneto. Their Pinot Grigio is a particularly great value, punching way above its weight class. Delicately scented and soft on the palate, it offers classic citrus and floral notes in a balanced elegant style. It’s smooth and refreshing with a long, pleasant finish. Great with food.
It’s an electric white Burgundy, with a limestone-laced aromatic profile of green apple, pear and hazelnut. Refined and high-toned, the pure, delicious fruit that is a hallmark of this terrific vintage, finishes long and fresh, with a mile-long mineral streak.
