One of the three big grapes of Valpolicella is Molinara, which traditionally made up a healthy percentage of both Ripasso and Amarone blends. The grape is pretty unique in the wine world. It’s a super light red grape, not able to extract dark colors in wine – no matter how long the skins are left in contact with the wine. But the acidity is delightful, almost perfect and the grape provides a lip-smacking savory that made great Amarone unforgettable.
Bowing to an international palate preference for super-dark, rich, over-the-top wines (thank you Mr. Parker), the Valpolicella Consortium limited the amount of Molinara allowed into traditional Valpolicella wines.
Many wineries just shrugged it off, but not Buglioni. Instead, the family made a sparkling rose from 100% Molinara, named it ‘il Vigliacco’ or ‘the coward’ and dropped off the very first case on the doorstep of the Consortium.
I guess like many of the best wines in the world, adversity was the mother of invention. It turned out that Molinara was the perfect grape for Sparkling Rose. This one is a beauty, and at the price… I went all in.

If you’ve never heard of Bisci, let’s start here. This is a Nicholas Faithful favorite. Even though it’s technically a non-vintage it was last disgorged in the 2020 vintage. La Cravantine, is a sparkling rosé of 100% Cabernet Franc, bone-dry, super fresh and with bubbles so tiny and fine, it puts most “real” Champagne to shame. Appealing strawberry and mineral scents are encased in a firm structure with a dry and spicy quality in the palate. This wine is incredibly versatile – perfect with just about any fish, fried food, or do like I do and enjoy it on it’s own.
The Bernard Reverdy Sancerre Rose 2022 is gorgeous. A beautiful pale pink to the brim, this baby is fresh and super aromatic with a complex nose of citrus, wild strawberries and white flowers. With air, higher tones emerge, with a great mingling of ripe fruit, and stony minerality. Medium-bodied, fresh and focused on the palate, with concise limestone-drive acidity, this is an elegant, lively, and energetic Sancerre Rose that mirrors the warm vintage but also the old vines rooting deep in stony soils. This is so much better than your run-of-the mill Rose – it’s an ageworthy, food-friendly Rose
The just released 2023 Crochet Sancerre Rosé is drawn from the high elevations of Janine and Teddy Crochet’s Pinot Noir vines in the village of Bué. The conditions are perfect for crisp, delicious Sancerre Rosé. Salmon-pink in color with a pretty nose featuring aromas of roses, orange peel and Bing cherry notes. This is as well-balanced as always with terrific fruit flavors of citrus and red berries with racy a high-toned finish.
