I’m pretty meticulous with my tasting notes but not always the best at archiving these emails. So maybe it slipped through the cracks but I can’t find an example of me ever offering Morgan Peterson-Twain’s Bedrock Old Vine Zinfandel.
Which is shocking because it’s one of my triumvirate of California Zins along with Ridge and Matt Cline’s Three. The common thread is always ridiculously old vines, generally planted by European immigrants during the turn of the last century in sandy soils that were naturally resistant to phylloxera.
Teldeschi Ranch (1890s)
Evangelho (1890s)
Nervo (1896)
Sodini (1905)
Katushas (1915)
And don’t forget their own estate property, the oldest of the bunch was planted in 1888. The wine is always outstanding but in 2021 it’s even better (and higher scored). The wildfires caused the usual vineyard sources in Amador county to be picked early for rose.
The only available solution was to make up the difference with an extra dose of Teldeschi Ranch which composes over 20% of the blend this year. I’ll take that any day.

94 Points, Wine Spectator
Spry and briary, this Zinfandel is fun to drink, with lively black cherry, licorice and dried sage flavors, which take on richness and cracked pepper accents toward zesty tannins. Drink now through 2031.

91 Points, Wine Enthusiast
Always the one with the most personality of the bunch, this is what Wine Enthusiast had to say about the 2021 release: “This extremely ripe and bold style of Pinot Noir will please those seeking such lushness. Dark in the glass, it begins with black cherry, toasty caramel and cola milk shake aromas.” The cool, coastal days and abundance of sunshine lines up perfectly for a wine that has a good natural acidic backbone, with bold fruit-forward flavors. In an easy 2021 vintage, Joe Wagner had a field day with this single-vineyard beauty.
90 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
Xavier Vignon’s brand spanking new CDR 100% is a thing of beauty. It’s already got a blessing from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate who described this wine as, “Full-bodied, concentrated and supple”. This is a gorgeous and intricate blend that features all of the Southern Rhone appellations. This year, the blend was 40% Grenache, 25% Mourvedre, 15% Syrah, 7% Cinsault, 7% Marselan, 6% Terret Noir. Nobody can do it like the mad scientist, Xavier Vignon.
With seemingly infinite access to some of the absolute very best vineyards in the most choice AVAs in the valley, the Wagner’s set out to make Quilt– a Cabernet blend from a patchwork of the top sites in Napa (Oakville, St Helena, Atlas Peak, Coombsville, Calistoga, and Howell Mountain.) The brand new 2021 edition is a beauty – deeply concentrated, rich and a truly show stopping Cabernet. It’s a dark, hedonistic blend that combines elegance with power and pairs the two together effortlessly.
95 Points, James Suckling – 94 Points, Wine Spectator – 93 Points, Wine Enthusiast
The new release is here from outstanding winemaking team of Michel Rolland, Charles Thomas, Andy Erickson and David Jelenik. This one always represents one of the best quality-to-price ratios in all of Napa Cab and in the stellar 2021 vintage, this really stands out as one of the best the Valley has to offer. It’s a racy mix of Coombsville fruit from Atlas Peak that absolutely roars out of the bottle. Always one of Napa’s great bargains and a must have even as the price starts to sneak up here a little bit.
