The 2021 vintage in Napa Valley was truly a lifesaver. It was the right vintage at the right time. After the wildfires threw a wrench in most folks’ 2020, the 2021 vintage provided a much needed reprieve for the entire valley. The quality across the board is excellent. Not many vintages get a 97-point rating from Wine Spectator.
Based on the dozens of 2021 Cab Sauvs that I’ve tasted, I would say 90% of the wines are fantastic — a pretty staggering amount when you think about it. But, since most wineries were hit hard financially by wildfires and a pandemic, many raised prices the following year in an attempt to make some of it back.
But not Ry Richards. Not Fiancetto. Not even for their trademark ‘Gravelly Loam’ bottling.
Instead, he did what has become a nearly impossible feat: He made a total knockout Napa Valley Cabernet that you can somehow score for under $30/bottle today when part of a case order. That’s as special as it gets.
Winemakers like Ry Richards were able to take advantage of the high quality and high yields of 2021, locking into two parcels to make what I know is going to be a straight-up legendary vintage of his Fiancetto Gravelly Loam Cabernet. This is one of those wines that I know is going to get better each time you revisit it too.

Winemaker Patrick Brunet’s tiny Domaine Robert estate consists of 50-60 year old vines, deeply rooted in the granitic soils of Fleurie. What I love about him is that every vintage brings something new but it consistently stays excellent. For his 2022 cuvee, Patrick produced a concentrated, structured Beaujolais that’s roaring out of the gates but with the bones to improve in the bottle over the next decade. This is always a fantastic bottle to have around.

“Vignon’s 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape delivers even more than I hoped for based on a previous sample. Hints of garrigue, roses, cherries and raspberries appear on the nose, while the palate is full-bodied, silky and long, with an intense, almost briny finish. The assemblage is 50% Grenache, 10% each Mourvèdre and Syrah, plus smaller proportions of seven other permitted varieties, while the élevage includes foudres, demi-muids, concrete and wooden tanks, plus terracotta amphorae.”

“Needing plenty of air to show at its best, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard is a sensational, gorgeous Napa Valley Cabernet that delivers the goods like only this region can. Pure Cabernet magic on the nose, with deep blackcurrants, smoked tobacco, lead pencil, and a kiss of spring flowers as well as a beautiful Pessac-Leognan-like scorched earth character, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, silky tannins, no hard edges, and a great, great finish. It’s one of those wines that builds incrementally on the palate and it’s only after the second or third sip that you realize how special this wine is. It also offers that rare mix of power and elegance that’s the hallmark of all great wines. It needs a couple of hours in the decanter if drinking any time soon. Hats off to Paul Hobbs for an incredible Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.“
With seemingly infinite access to some of the absolute very best vineyards in the most choice AVAs in the valley, the Wagner’s set out to make Quilt– a Cabernet blend from a patchwork of the top sites in Napa (Oakville, St Helena, Atlas Peak, Coombsville, Calistoga, and Howell Mountain.) The brand new 2021 edition is a beauty – deeply concentrated, rich and a truly show stopping Cabernet. It’s a dark, hedonistic blend that combines elegance with power and pairs the two together effortlessly.
