The Studio by Miraval Provence Rose is made by none other than superstar winemaker Marc Perrin, who has countless times turned the wine world on its head with his 100-point Chateauneuf du Papes at Chateau de Beaucastel. But for a few years now, his vibrant, high-toned Provencal Rose has outsold his beloved flagship wines. Its first vintage in 2018 was met with great fanfare, earning a rave 91-point review from Vinous and was called, “extremely interesting and in no way easy-going pink wine for the money.”
The wine is drawn off a very special vineyard, tucked away in a private valley on an ancient terrace, planted between 750 and 1150 in elevation. I gotta be honest with you — not many folks in Provence have this kind of asset.
The 2020 Studio by Miraval Provence Rose is a vibrant blend of Rhone varietals that has a completely different mouthfeel and stylistic approach than its cousin the Miraval and manages to crush it. I think I enjoy this style more– and then there’s the price which is simply unbeatable. This one has a similar pale salmon color, but is a fresher, racier version of Rose that is not as fleshy and fruity and instead is more high-toned and refreshing as a result. There’s still great fruit here by way of wild strawberries, raspberry and rhubarb with a mineral streak on the finish that finishes smooth, dry and long.

Medium to full-bodied, ultra-pure, with grippy, sappy tannins, flawless balance, and a great finish, it’s pure class all the way. Xavier Vignon’s brand spanking new CDR 100% is a thing of beauty. It’s already got a blessing from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate who described this wine as, “Full-bodied, concentrated and supple”. This is a gorgeous and intricate blend that features all of the Southern Rhone appellations. This year, the blend was 40% Grenache, 25% Mourvedre, 15% Syrah, 7% Cinsault, 7% Marselan, 6% Terret Noir. Nobody can do it like the mad scientist, Xavier Vignon.

“The Maret family is known for the top Châteauneuf du Pape, but they also make some brilliant Vacqueyras. Their 2020 Vacqueyras is a 60/40 split of Grenache and Syrah, and it has lots of darker fruits and peppery herb aromatics to go with a medium to full-bodied profile on the palate. This is a lively, elegant vintage for the Southern Rhône, and it shows in this wine’s elegance and freshness.”

“Vignon’s 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape delivers even more than I hoped for based on a previous sample. Hints of garrigue, roses, cherries and raspberries appear on the nose, while the palate is full-bodied, silky and long, with an intense, almost briny finish. The assemblage is 50% Grenache, 10% each Mourvèdre and Syrah, plus smaller proportions of seven other permitted varieties, while the élevage includes foudres, demi-muids, concrete and wooden tanks, plus terracotta amphorae.”
